Been here in Florida for 4 days now. Been digging trenchs for the underground plumbig. Lots of digging. I'm old and digging isn't fun anymore. I'm "mucho" sore. Got the entire drainage system piping installed, air tested, backfilled, and it passed inspection. Need some sleep. Been up way bofore daylight and workin till the sun goes down. Beats shoveling that 16-18-20 inchs of snow that you guys got though. I think.

I'm thinking that I have a pinched nerve in my back. Been looking at different excersises and doing them. Not working though. May have to find a chiropracter down here. More digging to do today. I have to run 80' of 2" conduit for power to the big garage and about 60' for the water supply.

There's a thing called a ditch witch or a mini track hoe for that kind of work. I don't hand dig anything if I don't have too. Same reason getting to old and my time is better spend enjoying other things. Hope your back feels better.

That's a lot of digging Tony, I couldn't do that. On the plus side you don't have to worry about frostbite. Had a dentist appt. yesterday morning, sure enough they plowed the street while we were gone. Filled the end of the driveway with a foot of heavy packed snow. My fingers were frozen just riding the tractor to clean it out. Think I'd prefer digging in the Fl sunshine.

Got some more done today. I decided to go with bigger doors in the shop building, so I had to move two posts. 6x6, 16 feet long, 3' in the ground. Man, they are heavy! I thought that would be easy. I thought wrong. Back feels better. Drank some good whiskey.

I hear ya Hank. I'm liking this weather a hell of a lot more than the stuff you guys are getting at home. I think Kathy is about fed up with snow.

Just upload them onto your "page" here. Then you can post the pics big, instead of having to click on them.

Sounds like you are having fun. lol Just not playing in the snow. I don't mind it now that the temps are rising, but the negative numbers were aweful.

Tony, just push the * and the # sign on your cell phone and say" load pics to chevelle forum" and it will automatically load them for you. It works better if there are other people around when you do it. Let me know how it works.

Oh, she is tired of snow shoveling, thats for sure. I'll be here another week. Concrete contractor is starting today, well guy is starting in a couple of weeks. We are going to be putting fence at my brothers house for a couple of days now. 3000 feet of fence. Should be fun.

Another long day. Put in 6" wooden fence posts most of the day. Me and post-hole diggers don''t get along too good. They always want to hurt me. Today the won.

Concrete guys were at the job all day. They have all the footings dug and most of the floor space smoothed and leveled. If everything goes as planned, concrete will be done this coming weekend.

I may have to temperorarly remove about 50" of the 4" pipe from the garage to the septic, so the excavator can get back in there. I hope not.

FlintTony

Oh yeah Ric, I was beat. 12 days of hitting it hard, turns out that when I fell up here a couple of days before I left, I knocked my pelvic bone on the left side way out of whack. That is what caused all the back and leg pain while I was working. Pinched nerves are a bitch. Flash, I plan on going back down in March to build all the interior walls and get the plumbing stacked out, set the tub and showers, and run all the water lines. I'm flying down next time. Way too much time wasted driving.

Hank, back is doing a lot better. Went to the saw-bones 6 times last week. I think he finally got it back in place on saturday. Doug called today, it was almost 80 degrees down there. He called a few days ago, bitching because it was only 58. MIL is still here. She may be going home in a few days. Man, I hope so. Sure changes a mans world when someone else moves in. Hows everything in your world?

01-29-2014, 06:02 AM
What was weird when I was down there is the harder that I worked, the better my back felt. I spent a lot of time bent over though. Until I tried to sleep. I was waking up every hour or so, couldn't find a spot to lay that wasn't killing me. I was doing stretches, jumping jacks, crawling around on the floor in the middle of the night. It was miserable until I got moving. I spent over 300 bucks at the Chiropractor down there too, but he didn't get low enough with his x-rays to find the real problem. I've had to plow 8 times since I've been back home. That tractor beats the shit out of my back, with all the ice under the snow. Thanks for the concern.

Hank70SS
01-29-2014, 08:10 AM
Glad you're doing better Tony. I checked the weather the other day in Homestead, FL, high of 81. We'll be less than 10 miles north of there so that sounds great. As you can see the weather here is miserable, bitter cold or snowing or both. That old Bolens garden tractor I bought a couple years ago sure paid for itself this year.

I just hope we get enough of a break in the weather to get the motorhome loaded up and on the road. Don't really want to drive that to FL with the nasty weather they've had down south.

Thanks everyone. It figures, we got another 5" of snow last night. I'm not going to get on the tractor to plow. Not supposed to drive for a few days. I pushed my way out to the shop, one shovel at a time. Took a while, but I made it and wasn't out of breath. That felt pretty good. Dan, the guy across the street is going to try and use my tractor today. I plow his driveway in trade for haircuts from his wife. I did a lot of research before I made my final decesion on this type of building. Most people are unaware of this type of structure. Here is a quick read about them if you are interested.

Article:
Post and beam construction is rooted in architectural history as far back as the Roman Empire. In fact, Stonehenge itself is a post and beam structure. So are the interiors of both Egyptian and Greek temples. Most of these historical structures were constructed using stone post and beams. Over time, wooden beams began replacing the stone because wood required fewer supports which allowed for larger interior spaces without interruption.

Post and beam construction is the simplest example of load and support construction – two upright columns or posts supporting a horizontal rafter or beam. This type of construction is the basis of all structural openings from doors to windows, from ceilings to roofs.

While surviving as one of the simplest forms of lad and support construction, the post and beam system has undergone recognizable changes over time without veering far from the original concept. The most obvious change is in material. From stone to wood, wood to metal, metal to reinforced concrete and back again, the materials for building have gotten stronger, and for the most part, lighter over time.

Post material must be strong in compression and be able to support its load without buckling. Both wood and metal have proven excellent for this job. The beam, in turn, must bear the weight of the load that rests upon it whether it is a floor ceiling or roof. Steel and wood have far outperformed stone in this position due to their strength in bending. This bow-strength allows for much greater spans which in turn allow for larger openings. Modern construction has taken great advantage of this property of wood enabling construction of buildings of varying shape, size, and length.
Much modern construction in both steel and concrete is based on the post and beam system as well. This includes most modern skyscrapers across the world. The original concept has, however, changed over time. While post and beam used to be two separate pieces, they have now become one single unit allowing for the stressed to be evenly distributed throughout.

This uni-body construction of the original post-and beam unit has led the way towards pre-engineered and prefabricated home panels and units allowing for home construction to occur much more quickly and efficiently.

Yep, no load bearing walls. I'm thinking that we'll have open ceilings in the front half of the house. Exposed, boxed trusses, with planking at the roof. It cost me about 25% more to build this way than conventional stick-framed. My brother Doug is a licensed Master carpenter and he carries a Contractors liscense in Michigan and Florida. We had a couple of arguments. He wanted to build it ourselves, stick style. Said we could save a ton of money, but I wanted this style.

Andrew did some flooding around there, but I don't know if the winds get that far inland to do a lot of damage. The County makes all new builds meet the Florida hurricane standards, so maybe they do. There are flood-level marks on some of the trees that are pretty high. Yep, around 80 miles or so.

Garlits place is in Ocala. I've been there a few times. There is some real cool stuff there. It's just a block or so off I75.

No berm yet, but I have a pretty good sized pile of dirt that I've shot into. After everything is inspected, I'm going to take some of the dirt from the stupid-ass " Engineered Storm water retention berm" and use that.

We got the interior ceilings, walls, all the backing, trays, and plumbing done in two weeks. That was just my brother Doug and I doing everything. When I got down there and saw the stacks and stacks of lumber and all the plumbing supplies, I thought "no way in hell are we going to get this done in two weeks". Surprised myself, being as we are both getting up there in years.

Not much going on down there in Florida. The electrician has been hitting it pretty good. We are having the kitchen cabinets custom made by River Valley Cabinets in Frankenmuth Michigan. The wood is alder wood, from Colorado. All one inch thick, dovetailed, soft close drawers and doors.

Thanks Ray, I think it will look pretty decent too.

That is the second batch they ordered for the doors and drawer faces Hank. The first one didn't have enough knots in it. Well. it had plenty for me, but not for Kathy. She picked the wood and the stain. My input was American wood and hardware only. The 3/4 plywood is manufactured over by Grand Rapids, using only American wood. The hardware is made in Iowa.

You the man Ric! Drag your as on up here and have a couple of cold beers. Bring Hank and the crew too. How's the crummy-assed, no clock workin, Camaro running? Have you had your Chevelle out?

Anybody hear from Ray Barnes this summer?

I'm having a hell of a time finding American made light fixtures. The ones I have found are priced at 5 times the price of imported shit. I'm going to start searching for Canadian made stuff in the morning. If anyone has any suggestions, let me know. Appreciate it.

And lastly, I feel out of place on a Chevelle site now that I don't have one.

Camaro is running good it good 40k on it now and have all the stuff to do a tune-up on it just have to read up on points and dwell since it's been over 30 years since I've messed with them.

I have been out of town for 4 of the last 6 weeks so I have not done anything to the Chevelle till today...I have put in the new tank, sending unit and lines in today's and just have to hook up lines and put gas in and see what else it needs..ha

Eric sold his Chevelle last week and pick this up from my neighbor and he is one happy guy. It is supercharged and a 175 hp shot of nitrous and wheelie bars that with the slicks on it they do work.

A few miles south of 59 off Old 23. He's on the west side across from Bitten Lake. If you know where Camp Tamarack is, it's the first street south of it. Ore Creek runs under 23 from Bitten Lake and across the back of his property.

My brother and the electrician worked on the wiring again today. Transformer went out on the brand new air conditioner. They got that fixed. The American made outside lights I found are real nice pieces. They just have to figure out how they are going to mount them. It was hot down there today, but they pulled over 1000 feet of wire. Most likely they won't get anything done for a few weeks now.

I have the EPA convinced that I am a tree hugging, varmit loving, insect loving, flower child that would never cause any issues that could disrupt the ever so fragile eco system anywhere in the world, let alone pollute the atmosphere with evil gun powder and contaminate the precious earth with any amount of lead.

No property up north yet. Looking for the perfect chunk of ground.

The house and attached garage electrical should be done this week-end, rough plumbing is all done in the house and big garage. Insulation should be done in the next couple of weeks in all buildings. Drywall is still up in the air. The prices I've gotten have me thinking that we may end up doing it ourselves. As much as I don't want to. The cabinets are all built and down there. The interior doors and all trim and crown are being made now, same guys that built the cabinets are doing them. Small family run cabinet shop in Frankenmuth. I'll be down there the first week of Dec for a couple of weeks. Have to get the fence and gates done before the first of the year. Had the dozer guy there yesterday clearing a path through the woods for some of the fence. He also took care of the big trees that came down in a storm. This snow and ice we got last night sure makes me want to be there instead of here. I'm heading to the Chiropractor this morning to start a series of "decompression" shit. When I fell last year on the ice, I twisted some stuff pretty good in my back. Then went to Fl and worked my ass off. Mucho pain lately. X-rays and MRI show I need some major work done, so I'll start with him and see how it goes. Hope to be better in a few weeks.

The door hinges are ball-bearing type, due to the weight of the doors. Each of the 3'doors weighs 85 pounds. Total weight of the trim and doors is 3500 pounds. My brother is going to haul them back to Florida next week. He will be running a little over-weight in his truck, but the fines aren't too much.

I've been down here in Florida for two weeks now. Be back home this afternoon. Got a bunch accomplished. The drywall guys started yesterday. All the buildings are insulated now. I had the foam put in all of them. Makes a world of difference.
When I was here, this is a list of the trades I did.
Plumber
Electrician
Cable guy
Mechanic
Fence installer
Post hole machine
Ditch digger
Landscaper
Carpenter
Tractor operator, mucho brush hogging and backfilling
Yard drain specialist...I dug an 80' thench and installed a grated area drain

I have a few pictures that I can put up if anyone wants to see them. Been a long two weeks. I'm sore in spots I didn't know I had.

Rough framing Hank. The drywall guy had some ideas for the tray ceilings, so we added some backing for him. The walls are 9 feet tall where the trays are, so we wanted 54" drywall sheets. None available, so we had to add backing in every wall for the extra joint. Also got the 3/4 bath in the shop all framed, plumbed, and wired. Installed a livestock watering tank, with an automatic fill valve. Put in 4 gates, with "H" posts on all of them. Drove over 100 steel fence posts with that stinking primitive driver that you lift up and smash down on the post. Strung three 330' foot rolls of farm fence.

The drywall guy is from Ohio. He is higher on his price, but he is dependable and does excellent work. He will be painting the whole thing too.

Ric, Kathy seems to think that I need one of those smart phones. Me, not so much.

Will try to get some pictures put on here in the next day or so. Got a ton of shit to catch up on here.

Will you have some Angus beef steaks from your ranch when we stop by?

FlintTony

Actually, I'm way ahead of my original schedule. When I started this project, I was thinking it would take at least a couple of years, as we are doing so much of it ourselves and I'm over a thousand miles away. It's been just a little over a year since we started clearing the land. If all goes as planned with the drywall, I will be back down there in a month to start installing the cabinets, interior doors, and trim.

The cows that are coming in are a mixed breed. I forgot what they are called, but the name won't make a difference as to how they taste. Can a guy be arrested for cattle rustling on his own land?

John, lots more done now. Drywall is all done and painted. Vinyl floors are installed. Wiring is almost finished, I have power on now. My brother is just getting started on the vanities and medicine cabinets. Trim, doors, and cabinets are next. Had some more concrete poured. I was supposed to be down there right now. My wife has been having mucho problems with her rotator cuff. She was scheduled to go in for surgery on the 10th of Feb, but it has gotten so bad they moved the surgery up to next Thursday. She is in so much pain, she can't do much around here, so she wanted me to stay home. I had planned to be there for two weeks now and two weeks at the end of Feb. All that's changed for now. Doc says 3-6 months recovery time from the operation.

I can't figure out how to post more pictures. My Photobucket account says I have used all my storage space up. I've been deleting some pictures, but it still says all used up. When I get something figured out, I'll post some more pictures.

Thank you all. I'm happy to share the build.

The sod is supposed to go in next week. That should really change the looks of the yard. I'm pretty excited to see that change.

On another note, the relator that we bought the property from called my brother and wanted to talk to him. My brother met him over there. Seems the realtor has been driving by quite a bit, saw the gate open, and went back there and looked around. He wants to buy the place. He will give me twice what I paid for the land and almost double what we have spent on construction. Told him "no thanks".

Hank, I hate this housework so much, I'd pay for the boy. When we were in the emergency room, she asked me if I wanted to trade her in for two thirty year olds. Food for thought.

She goes to the Doc on Wed to see what he can do. I'm hoping I'll still be able to get down there and get some work done. I tell ya, I'm going crazy.

I spent about 10 hours putting music on an Sd card that is supposed to make music on my filipper phone. Don't play. Took it to the phone guy and he said it was formatted on some WMA shit and is supposed to be on MP3, so if he can't convert it, I'll have to start over. Fun times for sure. I'm going out now to pull the winter fence from the pond. Most likely, I'll fall into that freezing water.

Tony sounds like you had a rough time with a phone. Mine just did an update and all my settings are gone. I like the ease of getting on the internet, but at what expense if we have to keep resetting them.

Since you're already pissed off I might as well ask about the mismatched work boots. Did you do a phone rant on them yet?

Not going to Florida today. Damn it. Wife is still having to take pain pills at night to sleep. Man, this is 3 trips that I have had to cancel, which puts me way behind on my schedule. I changed flights again, cost me another 300 bucks. Insane, I tell ya, insane.

Got the cats and dogs fed, gave the old cat his medicine, got kitty-litter cleaned, got floor vacuumed, got the dogs dishes washed, made bacon and eggs for breakfast, did the stinkin dishes again, changed the sheets on the bed, have one load of laundry in the dryer and one in the washer. Now I'm going to finish cutting down the trees that fell in the 60 mph winds, then start raking the pond. I'm going to apply for my "domestic worker" union card pretty soon.

The boots problem has been resolved. Turns out, like was said above, they just throw whatever is available in the box and hope for the best.

I am not allowed in Wal-Mart. I had a big paragraph on what happened, but after smokin a joi...no, after thinking about it, I deleted it. BFD. I hate that shit-hole.

After all the crap I went through to get my phone to play music, I guess I'll turn the radio on and listen to that today.

When I went to the phone store a couple of weeks ago, I was seriously thinking about getting a smart phone. But the guy said my old junker would play music, so I wasn't interested in the smart one. A friend stopped by and showed me some stuff he can do on his smart one. Damn, those things sure do a bunch of stuff.
