72' SS 454 engine cooling fan...

Trying to figure out the correct part #. It seems to be quite clearly defined for 70' & 71' - but not 72'. The numbers I have seen for 72' so far are: 3999260, 3999265, 3947772. However, none have been 100% verified to my knowledge. Does anyone have an old GM book with part #s? Or a picture of one from an unmolested car?

TIA

Try 3991431.

On Team Chevelle they are calling that a fan for a 70's 350 with A/C. They claim the BBC cars got 18" fans, and the SBC cars got 19".

Well, don't know what to tell you, don't have a book with the numbers. I know they list a different fan shroud for 72 BBC, what size is yours?

I settled on an unstamped 3947772 fan. I couldn't find a 72' dated fan, I found one for early 73', and another for late 70'. The rest were repops or 69' dated.

IIRC, I have the 28" shroud. My Monte Carlo is a small block and has the 26" shroud.

Just to update this... and to add to the confusion. I was able to look at a "survivor" car recently. It had a 3999265 fan instead of the common 772. The 73' dated 772 fan I found on eBay a while back is a real oddity. Possibly it was an over the counter replacement?

I think the 772 I have on mine is dated 73. Don't know what it came off of.

I located and purchased a 3999265 fan last night. Bowtie smiley

Ok, here is some more clarification now that I have an example of each fan in my posession...

Your common "772" fan:

And a real deal 3999265 72' LS5 cooling fan vs. a 3999260 fan, used on SBC cars from what I can tell. (the shiny one is a 3999260 I restored and will not be using):

So just to recap, I am 99.9% sure that:

3947772 fan is correct for 1969 & 1970 HP big block cars. (L78, L89, LS6, L72)

3989095 fan was used on 1971 LS5 & LS3

3999265 fan is specific to 1972 LS5 & LS3

Hoping this will clear up some confusion for others down the line.
