where you put aftermarket radio?
Hello. i am looking at a 69 chevelle which actually has the original AM radio in the dash. given i want to keep the original look to the car, where do you folks suggest a person could put a aftermarket AMFM /I POD radio? i don't want to mount under dash as i would want to keep that area clean. the AM radio works per seller. the car is a bucket seat/console Malibu. thanks for suggestions.

You can get a modern radio, no CD player, that will fit in the opening of the original radio. Check with the suppliers. NPD, Ground Up, etc.
I mounted mine under the dash in a boat type radio enclosure .
what about the console or inside glove compartment? I would want to keep the original AM radio in the dash.
There are vendors out there that can update the internals without changing the appearance. Going that route with the factory am/fm radio in my 72'.
They sell a radio that looks original, but is updated. You just keep the original and can always put it back in down the road.

I got my original AM. On the shelf with my extra clutch pedals. Thing weighs 50 lbs it seems like.
My first chevelle had the oddball AM stereo deal in it. |
what about putting a new radio/ipod jack in glove compartment with a remote? does anyone do that? that way I can keep the original radio in the dash.
Alot of people put it in the glove box with a remote. I almost did that.
oh ok, that's what I may do

To avoid some serious modifications, under the dash is a good location for the new radio unit.

question. I tried to put the 6x9 speakers in my rear package try on my 69 couple. I couldn't get them to go in because of the metal cross members that cross over the areas where the speaker should go. is this odd, or do I need to cut that metal out to put it in? it currently does not have speaker in the back . thanks
The metal under the package tray should have 2 ovals cut out of it for speakers. Shouldn't have any cross members there.....just the stamped out package tray steel.
On my 68 I had to trim them to get the speakers in. I mounted them from the bottom. I had to put a fiberboard on top to make a new package tray so it met with the interior in other places and looked factory.
