What Did You Do To Your Chevelle Today

I put a spacer between the carb (Edelbrock) and intake due to it flooding sfter start up and smoking .Its been like this ever since we put the new motor in ,hard to crank after sitting for a few minutes and the smell of raw gas out the exhaust .This spacer for whatever reason fixed the problem .

Krille 09-05-2011 01:53 AM

Changed oil to 20w-50. 5 psi at 650rpm when hot anyway....

Derek69SS 09-05-2011 11:23 AM

Nothing yet.

But I just finished re-wooding the coilbox in my Model T. :) I'm just about to ready to head out the door, taking the kids for a ride to Grandma's house in it.

When I get there, I plan to fix the leaky valve-stem on the '66 Malibu wagon.

I believe it's a heat issue with those edelbrocks, a carb spacer with gasket at each end to act as thermal-breaks slows the heat-transfer to the carb, so the carb stays cooler. When you'd shut the car off, the gas would heat up and expand, and dump a bunch of fuel into the intake.

flash 09-05-2011 12:38 PM

Derek ,you described it perfectly .I cant believe how simple of a fix that was .

I did the same thing to my newely installed Edelbrock carb. It had a Holley SA 770 which was way too much for my motor so I swapped it out for an Edelbrock 650. Runs a lot better, no pump shot hesitation anymore either. I also leaned out the idle mixture a bit.

I also replaced the lug nuts on my new Centerline wheels. Summit had sent me the open ended lug nuts when I wanted the closed end ones. I got them last week but just got around to installing them today.

I had planned on cleaning the El Camino today but its been raining all day not that Im complaining .We really needed the rain although we are having tornado's forming all around us right now and they terrify me.

Rharp 09-05-2011 04:41 PM

I also had to put a spacer under my edelbrock 650.
Put the carb on about 2 weeks ago and whenever it would get hot and turned off it seemed like the heat was boiling the fuel. Then when I fired it back up it would spit and sputter for a while.
Just got back from taking the wife and kid out to lunch to a local burger joint. We went about 50 miles and it ran great. Runs alot stronger then it did with the Rochester quadra jet on it. I think the air up here is too thin for that carb. Could not get it to run right no matter what we tried.

Ms Grumpy 09-05-2011 06:00 PM

I pulled it out and took it for a ride to the gas station. The last time I was out I left it on fumes. The weather was in the 60's and overcast, but boy did the motor love that cool air.

SS Shaun 09-05-2011 09:16 PM

i looked at it :)

flash 09-05-2011 09:25 PM

I did crank mine and moved it forward in the shop a few feet .

earthquake68 09-08-2011 06:56 AM

Body work, rust repair, and today it'll get a little primer. I also have to get the "temporary" engine for it. I'm trading an old Savage 30/30 I haven't fired in 7 years for a complete running 350 with all the accessories still bolted to it. Woo Hoo!

shadowgray396 09-08-2011 08:51 AM

MIne has been on hold for the last 3 weeks. Not much going on with the weather being so nice, to many outside projects need to get completed before winter gets here.

Krille 09-08-2011 10:42 AM

Brought my son from school
Every ride in the Chevelle make me smile.

70SS396 09-08-2011 12:18 PM

I forgot to mention, I drove it to work on Wednesday, it was the talk of the company. :)

flash 09-08-2011 01:38 PM

When I finish mowing the yard after work Im going to clean out the trunk of the vert so we can pack for our trip to Maine .Then Im going to clean the seat and carpet in my El Camino. My poor Elky has been neglected this summer as we have driven the vert so much ,now its about time to put some miles on her.

fleming23 09-08-2011 02:59 PM

Drove mine to work today for the first time in quite a few months.... Apparently all the delivery drivers have been talking about it all day. All I know is it better not have any dents when I go to leave work this time...

Thought I'd drive it one more time before I go out of town. Once we get back it'll go up on the lift for a transmission swap.

Ms Grumpy 09-08-2011 05:50 PM

Stood outside the garage door and said Rain Rain Go Away ! It has been raining for the past 3 days.

This time ? Does that mean that someone did some damage before ?

flash 09-08-2011 06:35 PM

Eric ,show them the pics . Did Darrel and Neal get you taken care of this time ? I know Darrel was waiting on it to come back from the other shop to buff it the last time I was there .

grandsport 09-08-2011 08:51 PM

Once in a while I get a chance to look at the black car.

flash 09-08-2011 09:10 PM

I got the Elky all cleaned inside but she runs terrible from sitting ,need to put in some fresh gas and fresh points and condenser .

SS Shaun 09-08-2011 09:18 PM

i had a dream that i sat in mine..lol

earthquake68 09-08-2011 09:30 PM

We got the primer down on the r/r quarter and deck lid. I'm not really looking forward to stripping the rest of the car. It sucks taking off 4 paint jobs with one of them being Imron.

68ChevelleSS 09-08-2011 10:40 PM

For the past month all I could do was dream about them. Haven't bought any parts yet. Still debating on going to a 700r4 or six speed in the 68.

Ms Grumpy 09-08-2011 10:49 PM

Six speed is more expensive, I like having the overdrive. I guess it depends on what you want to do with the car.

RBeckman 09-08-2011 11:22 PM

Clean it up and waxed it and then tried to straighten my antenna and broke it off, I know have a hole in my fender the night before the biggest car show around here.....oh well

flash 09-09-2011 08:46 AM

Joan let me drive her vert to work today so that I can get it ready to pack tonight. Boy was the ride refreshingly cool this morning with temos in the high 50's .

Yeah, something like that.... This was what my car looked like the last time I drove it to work. Happened right at 5:00 on a Friday as everyone was leaving. It was approximately 40 days before Chevellabration this year.

Tore it down this far

And finally back to this point the week of CB11
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/o...h_100_2488.jpg

Its been in and out of shops since that point and I haven't had much of a chance to drive the car the remainder of the summer.

Yeah, car is good to go now! Can't wait to get the 2004R in it so I can go on a few road trips once the weather gets nice (or stays like it has been this week).

I agree with the price. Just trying to get the RPMs down at cruising speed. I'd like to be at about 2000 rpms at 70mph.

When I was looking to replace the trans I wanted to be able to have the power and still be able to drive it to shows without the RPM's screaming on the expressway. That is why we went with the 200R4. And I really love it. If I stomp on it, it will squawk the tires in every gear (with my street tires on it). When I get on the expressway I can cruise and get decent gas mileage.

Here is a link to the conversations we had about what trans to go with:

What gears do you have in the rear? and what diameter of tire.

Ms Grumpy 09-11-2011 09:04 PM

We have a 373. The drag radials are 28" tires. The height of the ones on there right now, I am not exactly sure. Here is another link to a post where we were talking about the tires and rims.

fleming23 09-14-2011 08:34 PM

Well, today a full billet 200-4R from CK Performance was bolted into the car which of course created 50 other issues (well 3 to be exact.) The exhaust no longer fits as the cross-member now interferes with the x-pipe. The driveshaft (previously used in a TH350...) which everyone said would work, needs to be shortened by a couple inches as currently it is jabbed all the way into the transmission and has no room for movement when the suspension is compressed. Lastly, we had a small issue with the lock up switch wiring. Hopefully those will be sorted out tomorrow and the car will be on the road by this weekend.

Also, while the transmission was out I finally had the mini-started from DB electrical swapped out as it has been sitting on my shelf for the better part of a year.

That's all for today :)

Thanks Gary! I am quite happy with it. I love the Red and Black Chevelles but don't come across as many Forest Greens. It was originally Misty Turquoise but I am partial to the darker colors.

SS Shaun 09-14-2011 09:11 PM

i lend on it today to think about what i need to do to my magnum :) i will do some work to it this weekend for sure
