Autogear M22W

This past summer I installed a new AutoGear M22W transmission in my car.

that sure looks nice
how are the gear ratios and shifting duties?

Does look nice. I'd like one, only have a Muncie M20. The gear ratio between 1 & 2 is so close one of the 2 is a waste of time.

A factory wide box had a 2:52 first gear. A factory close ratio or M-22 had a 2:20 first gear. The M22W has a 2:56 first gear. My car had a close ratio 2:20 first gear in it and with the 2:56 in it now it winds up a lot faster in first gear. The spread between the other gears is pretty even and the car runs a lot better through the gears also. They also have a M22Z which has a 2:98 first gear. By using their formula going from the 2:20 to the 2:56 first gear it makes my 3:55 rear end gear ratio feel more like 4:10's in first gear.

I could use a M21 or M22 close, I always get the wide and close mixed up. I have a 3.73 rear. If I let off the gas going from 1st to 2nd, let the clutch out and the engine slows the car down.

Nice upgrade. I want an M22Z for my 69'. It would work well with the 3.31s.

Tell you the truth I wish I went with the M22Z too. The PO put a cam in the car that has a operating range of 3500 to 6500 RPM's. I would have put something in with a operating range of about 2000 to 5500 RPM's. I only have my shift light set for 5,000 RPM's and with the 2:20 low of the close ratio that was in the car before it took forever to reach the 5,000 RPM's. With the 2:56 low it hits a lot faster and if it had the 2:98 first gear it would even be better. I think with a 2:98 first gear it would have felt like I had 4:88's in the rear. All and all I'm still satisfied with the M22W. I'm a lot older now and don't do has much of the spirited driving as I did in my younger days if you know what I mean. ;):D

Unfortunately I am very familiar with what you are saying LOL. I was building motors and they stayed loaded up because I never beat them. Hence my new fad with the boat engines. They have good power for the occasional romping. But will idle along forever.

I will admit tho. Not getting tickets all the time is a nice side benefit.

My 69' isn't per se' "heavy." But, it will be a bit underpowered. (Basically stock L48 350) I know that I could swap to a steeper set of gears, but I'd rather not. I would like this car to be able to cruise a little. Hence why I feel that the gearing of the Z trans to be a perfect fit.

I have a Autogear M21Y that was in the crate when i bought my old Chevelle back. Previous owner bought it around 06-07 and never installed it. I contacted Autogear when I installed it and done everything they told me. It's not to bad with the 4:10, has the OD 4th gear. He said there was not a big market for these OD trans so they only built around 200 or so.
