dash lites dont work, radio lite does

hello, I am buying a 69 chevelle. seller says dash lites don't work, but factory am radio lite does. would this be a fuse you think, or headlite switch? he claims all outside lites work. he don't drive the car at nite he says, so that is why he never bothered to look into it.
thanks

Not sure on a 69 but 70s have a foil printed circuit that powers all the dash lights. It fits on the back of the dash pod and plug from the light switch plugs on to it. So could be bad connection there or a bad ground to the dash pod. Again on a 70 the radio light is gets power from another wire.

Ground is off the back of the gauges. It is mounted in plastic and without it the lights have no ground. 69 has a single wire and bulb that uses the snap in part as a ground to the chassis. Or gauge cluster in this case. Ground the gauge cluster to the Steering column frame.

so do I have to take out gauge cluster to get to this or can it be accessed from under dash?

Under dash. Just take a screw out and put a wire with a eyelet there. I has a bunch of little sheet metal screws holding the speedo and gas gauge cluster into the main cluster. Easy access to them laying upside down in the seat with your feet on the ceiling. Or the contortionist method of your choice.

Other end on the brace the steering column bolts to. If you look it is probably there already with the wire broke off. They do that it is a thin wire. Somebody hit it doing something else bla bla bla.

oh ok, thanks Chevymaher . the seller is a bit strange, as he has had the car for 15 years, but don't know if heater works, and never messed with getting dash lites working. he didn't drive the car much and claims didn't drive it in winter. so maybe that all makes sense. is the ground wire black in color?

chevymaher 11-05-2017 07:16 AM

Yes it is.

ok great. thanks!

chevymaher. another question. gas guage only works part time. U think this might be a ground issue too? i see a wire under by the gas tank, maybe its not grounded properly?
seems this car has ground issues. thanks

Yes take it off the frame and clean it and the frame. Put it back on. Up front there is a Motor to frame. May as well just clean them all. I am sure they all like that. Battery neg bolt to the motor. There is a frame to core support and frame to body.

If that don't solve it you got to drop the tank. On the sender there another connection. The other end of that wire that is on top.

I would buy 4-5 new straps and just run new ones all over.
