Braking problems..I need help....

Ever since I got my car back on the road I have been uncomfortable with the braking power. We had installed a power boost to help with the vacuum power. But I have noticed that I loose brake pressure/power.

Here is what happens: When I am driving and hit the brakes, I have awesome stopping power. But, when ever I depress the brake pedal and release it, then depress it again my brake pedal goes down lower and I lose braking power. I was told this is because the vacuum canister needs to build up pressure again. I can drive my car, but I have to be very careful, especially in traffic. But I don't want to drive it this way.

So I am considering installing a hydroboost conversion.
So has anyone ever installed or used the conversion ?
Do you know anyone who has it ?
Do they love it, hate it ?
I would love some feedback, please.......

If your engine has a big cam, it may not produce enough vacuum for your brake booster.

I've never driven anything with a Hydroboost, but I've only heard good things about them... does your Astro Van have one on it? A lot of those came w/ a hydroboost.

I have one sitting on the bench right now... I'll let you know how I like it in a few months. :D

Thanks for the quick response Derek..

And yes, I do have a big cam and that is why we opted for the brake booster hoping that it would fix the problem.

And yes, our Astro Van does have a hydroboost. And it has the best brakes of all the larger vehicles that I have ever driven.

And David just told me that he just ordered the hydroboost. The only problem is that they do not come with the brake line because it is hydraulic brake line. None of the companies include the brake line with the kit. So we will have to measure it and have it made. Hopefully we can find someone close to have them made. Anyone have any suggestions. Boy am I feeling needy today.

I still want to know how you like the conversion when you get yours done Derek.

Your existing brake line should work (might need to be tweaked a little because the M/C will move a bit). I assume it's the Power Steering lines that you'll need to have made.

I bought mine as a kit (not sure about the brand, bought it from someone who changed his plans and decided not to install it on his Chevelle) and it came with some braided hydraulic hoses and the proper ends, I just have to find someone with the tools to crimp them on it.

I had the same problem with my truck but my fix wont work for you .My fix is the cam is going back to stock as Id like less power and better gas mileage as well as driveability since its going to be my daily driver when it comes home someday.

I don't wanna change the cam !!!!! I know it would probably fix the problem but I don't wanna....

McMaster Carr ought ought to have some real nice looking braided steel pressure lines, with fittings of your preference and in several lengths.

Otherwise, NAPA.

How much vacuum do you make at idle? What is the engine's idle speed?

Ms Grumpy 03-30-2011 12:05 PM

I am pretty sure that it idles at about 800, and my answer to the amount of vacuum at idle is ...I honestly don't know. I know that is the wrong answer right now. I am hoping to get the car out in the next week to get that answer. Mother Nature just needs to cooperate.

Here is a link to the hydroboost conversion parts that we ordered.

I just returned from NAPA. I asked the guy if they had any hydraulic hose to use with the hydroboost conversion. The guy said that they carried a braided hose, but it probably would not recommend it for what we need.

I know that I could purchase the hoses for a couple hundred dollars, but I am still going to look for the best deal. The search continues.
