RogerD's 69 COPO/Dick Harrell Chevelle
Hi Gang:
I'm new to the site (Joined last year but a glitch prevented posting my intro) http://oldcarandtruckpictures.com/Ch...elle-jan4b.jpg My ride will be back on the road soon . . . http://www.chevelles.com/forums/atta...3&d=1402604367 I bought it new On Aug 19, 1969 - 1st date with my wife May 30, 1970. . . Traded it off in Oct 19, 1970 - Tracked it down/bought it back in Aug 2009 . . . http://www.chevelles.com/forums/atta...7&d=1402602693 |
Welcome ,nice 69 you got there .
|
WelcomeWaving awsome Chevelle you have there.:ntwrthy:
I see you are the original owner, do you have more restoration photos? |
Welcome Roger. Thats one beautiful chevelle you have there !
I must admit that I know very little about the Copo cars other then they are rare, worth a lot of cash, and fast. Can you tell us how many were made like your ? Dave |
Very cool! What's the story on the stripes?
|
Stripes, 69 COPO/Dick Harrell Chevelle
Dave - There were a few '68 HARRELL CARS - Transplant 427 Chevelles, Camaro's and Novas in addition to a few '69 COPO/Harrell modified Camaro's and one COPO/Harrell modified Chevelle. The one I bought new is the only '69 COPO/Harrell Chevelle of which I am aware.
Derek - "hood locks" and "spec. striping" (called out on the Harrell MSRP and Bill Allen Invoice), performance mods, Sun SST802 tach (on the steering column), A Harrell emblem on the deck lid and two Chevy "V8" emblems on the front fenders - all done at Harrell's shop. An AM radio was the only factory option other than the COPO (factory installed components) stuff. That's exactly the way it was the day I bought it new, Aug 19, 1969! |

Here's a bit of history - my '66 Chevelle SS trade in docs, my '69 COPO/"Mr Chevrolet" docs (with my '66 listed) and my '70 Camaro RS (with my '69 listed).

Most of the stuff is of no value other than to bring back memories - same reason I kept my first few new car docs. Matter of fact, I have the original Owner Manual for the '66 and for the '69 still - sure glad I didn't throw this stuff out over the years as I sorted out and threw away things. Just couldn't throw these away . . . |
Welcome, great pictures on your restoration. Very nice looking car.

Welcome Roger. Beautiful car. I look forward to hearing more stories.

It's cool to know that some of the original parts from my car will be used in the restoration of this one.
|
wow great looking 69!! my fav :)
|
Nice Chevelle, glad to hear you got it back and the resto looks beautiful. So aside from the paint it was fairly original when you got it back? I'm just impressed it lasted all these years without being hacked beyond recognition and then smashed up by a teenager! Lucky guy!
|
THANKS Derek - the parts package in transit should arrive in a day or two!!
Lucky indeed - car has not been on the road since the mid 1980's - in storage for years - never wrecked - original front fenders, doors and quarters. Fenders and quarters were replaced with NOS GM parts due to the normal rust on front fenders and accelerated rust due to cut-outs in the quarters for slicks. I put a ding in the edge of the driver fender (Nov 1969) right where it curls around to the grille - didn't scrape the paint, just a small oval shaped nickel sized flat spot 1/4" deep - ding was still there with body putty and white paint over it. Some original parts were missing - the restoration includes PN correct/CAST Date correct replacement parts across the board. Tweaked the exhaust extensions and did a test run on the tach - tight fit between the turn signal and flasher button - just enough space for the clamp exactly as Harrell's shop did it back in 69 . . . http://image.superchevy.com/f/featur...cover-COPO.jpg |
Any chance we get to see this beauty in Nashville for Chevellabration this year ?

Already have booked the rooms - next door neighbor and his wife plan to attend with us - he's a 'gearhead' as well with several completed projects under his belt. His interests are more along the 'hotrod' category - he's working on an early 50's chevy rat rod right now . . . |
I cant wait for CB11 ,hope its nice weather like last year .
|
That is a beautiful car and I love the color too.

Seatbelts
Hey Derek:
YES and WOW, first thing my wife said - buckle up . . . Back in the day, we never used them - your belts in my car, don't show much wear so I conclude you didn't use them all of the time or you were very, very careful!! :) |

A film crew was at Chevell-Abration shooting during the event. Show airs on FS Southwest and FS Houston (June 26th, 11AM and June 27th, 4PM). . . They filmed several Chevelles during the event - DVD's available via their website (after the show airs) at $9.95 each (including shipping) . . . MastersTV website - order a copy of the DVD here! |
Those are some nice pics. And I am glad to know when we can watch the Mother's Show. Our tent was just up over the hill and we watched as every car was pulled up and filmed for the show. It was funny watching people as they walked by and then realized that the camera was rolling. You never saw so many older men move so fast.
