1971 Chevelle 454 cowl induction hood w/o flapper
Bought a non stock 71 chevelle with a 454 motor and has a cowl hood with no flapper but has the air cleaner open top with rubber for the induction. Does it get air thru hood, looks like just pushed up against hood. Thanks

Mine has the flapper so can't say for sure. Does it have a snorkel coming out the side? Does the hood have an opening going towards the windshield? A picture of the hood would help. Sorry I can't help more.

Cowl Induction hoods had the flapper. The hoods without the flapper are "domed" hoods. To make a domed hood function, you would have build an air pan.

OK, thanks. It has a scoop in the back and a screen on it but I could not figure or see any way for the air to get into the breather.

Got some shots but does not show much.

Well, hard to see. Does the circle in the dome of the hood open to the back near the windshield? The air cleaner assembly is definitely the same as used with a cowl hood and flapper.
Is that real L78 or L89 386? |
Hank, I think you need to borrow Tony's glasses, the sticker on the air cleaner says 454. ;)

It does have a opening to the rear of hood but I can not see where the air would get in the breather unless it does not touch the hood.

The domed hood cars had a closed element air cleaner in 71'- 72'. I'll have look at the domed hood I have again. But, basically, if I recall correctly... you have to remove the screen and baffle from the rear of the hood.
I have one each, a domed hood and cowl flapper good, both original GM. I can try to slide by my folks place today and compare. (Both are off the cars) |
