Question crazy MSD setup in my 71 454 SS

Last week I pulled the cracked dashboard out of my car for replacement. When I took the dash pad off I found a second MSD box a 6A glued to the top of my glove box. I have a 6AL on the firewall. This is how they had them wired upThe 6A had the thin red wired to the ignition which is correct. The white points wire from the 6A then went out to the 6AL thin red wire to power it? The heavy black battery wire on the 6A went to ground and the thin black coil wire negative wire was the volt meter ground. Nothing else was hooked up on the 6A and the 6AL was wired correctly except for the thin red ignition wire which was getting power from the 6A white wire.. The car ran like this and very good. I thought they did this maybe because the newer 6AL on the firewall was bad. I pulled the 6A out and wired the thin red wire on the 6AL to the ignition. The car ran and even ran better than before. Any ideas of why they would go to all this trouble to do this???
