Default REBUILD which way to go?

I have a 72 454 with 74 oval port heads, edelbrock intake and 750 holley. It's making 370 hp. It does a pretty good job of pushing 67 chevelle - muncie -3.42 eaton. I just installed electric cut-outs and it sounds like a dump truck with no muffler. Some of the boys in the club have cut-outs and they sound good! Gotta pull motor this winter to fix oil leaks. I want to bump up hp to 425 to 450. Gonna do a cam and new intake. Shud I rework these heads or will they do the job. Engine has few miles, so bottom end should be ok (2 bolt mains) would like to make this around a 2,000 dollar job. Any ideas???
tks --- Hank

Your oval port heads will be fine for a mildly built big block. It wouldn't hurt to clean the bowls a bit if nothing has ever been done to them. Do you have the casting number on the heads? Also try and keep the cam on the mild side to make lots of torque and you'll have more fun with it with those highway gears.

Rattler, you're funny...calling 3.42s highway gears. That is cracking me up.

He's right on the cam, even though I am a smallblock guy, I know a smaller cam that will keep up cylinder pressure will definitely help make low end grunt...which ANY street car needs.

Another Hank, hi. Like Rattler said, post the casting numbers from those heads. The heads and cam will make all the difference. With the right combo 450hp is pretty easy to get to. What did the engine come out of?

Hey Guys, thanks for the come-back. This web-site is great! My wife says I'm going thru 2nd childhood (maybe) This is most fun you can have with your clothes on. The casting on my block is 3999289 It's sposed to be 1972, don't know what it's out of. The guy I bought it from said it was a Monte Carlo, but who knows. The casting on the heads is
336781 made from 74 to 78. I also would like to know where I can go to get some good info on what specs I shud incorporate into a new cam and lifters. I should also get info on a good intake. I would assume all these things need to work together to get a peak performance and reliablity. Once again thanks for the come-back. I'll let the boys know about this web. It's really informative and fun tks Hank

Comp cams camquest software is a free download and is extremely usefull for cam selections. Download this and give it a try.

Those heads should be 113cc, not truck peanut port heads, that's good. Compression should be high enough to handle a decent cam. With the Edelbrock intake, which one, and headers you should be over 400hp easy.

If you have spare coin for this project, there is a guy that does some sick sick things to those 781 heads... you could ship them to him, and let him port them for you...and easily gain 50 horses.
