Default 12 bolt question

I have the weaker 8.2 10 bolt rearend in my car and I'm wanting to put a set of gears in it with a posi unit but after paying for the posi and gears I'm probably going to be around $600-$700 just in those parts. I found a 12 bolt on craigslist about an hour from where I live, which will be a lot stronger than my 10 bolt. It has 4.11 gears and posi already in it. The guy hasn't said what he wants for it and to make an offer. What would be a good starting offer price? I was thinking about starting my offer at 5-$700, would that be reasonable or to high? I've seen prices on CL from other areas anywhere from $200 clear up to $1500. Here's the only pictures I have of it.

I don't know what your looking to do but. Your 10 bolt beefed up with new parts would be stronger than the used 12 bolt. The aftermarket carriers are rated at a ridiculous 1100 HP weak link in it would be the axle where it slides in the carrier then.

Buick GN's run 9's on the 7.5 rear ends. which are alot weaker than the 10 bolt you got. My brother is running a built 7.5 with a 440 chrysler and a supercharger. Slick compound street tires. It isn't grumbling about it. And that is the second supercharged car he used it in.

So unless your planning to run slicks get no slip at all and wheelie on a daily basis. What you got will do just fine.

You see just as many ford 9 inch and GM 12 bolts break at the strip as you do guys running 10 bolts. They are stronger built but unless your running slicks and doing 5 grand stall speed drops. You won't ever need it. Street tires and it will never break.

So if your doing it to say I got a 12 bolt cool. If it is for strength you got cheaper options than buying a 12 bolt housing and rebuilding it.

Just some things to think about.

We'll I was doing it for the strength. I don't care what's in it as long as it holds up. If I'm going to have to rebuild the 12 bolt, I'd have that much for money in it. I've heard you can build up the 10 bolts to be strong, but I've always heard the smaller 10 bolt (8.2) was weak. I'd rather build the 10 bolt with new, stronger parts and know its right than use an older 12 bolt I know nothing about. Thanks maher.

Unless you're planning on drag racing this with slicks, the freshened up 10 bolt driven by that small block will be fine.

Welcome. Just put in the C-clip eliminator kit. Protection for the cars sheet metal if a axle breaks. It wont walk out flopping around. But that is also true and advised with the 12 bolts they do it just as much.
Axles are cheap relatively speaking as compared to wiping out a quarter. But that is why people like the Furd rear ends. They got that factory.

I just had the big bearing Ford cups welded to the ends of the 12 bolt axle tube.
Much better solution than doing leaky C-clip elim kits...

Would that work on the 10 bolt also? What are bearing cups you're talking about?

If you have rear disk brake u dont need c clip eliminator.
Beef up the 10 bolt with an aluminun reinforcment cover..TA racing etc.
Eaton Tuned posi unit....stay away from cone type lockers.
373 gear has more teeth on the pinion than 411.
Im puting over 600ft lbs thru my built ten bolt...no problem.
If it ever does let go...im geting a strange S60

I do have rear disc on my 10 bolt, so the theory is the the caliper will hold the axles in along with the c-clips in place? As far as a posi unit is the Eaton/Detroit truetrac a good one? What gears would you suggest with mild street motor 400-425hp and a 700R4 trans. I was thinking 3.56 or 3.73?

I would not use the truetrac...its mostly for trucks as far as i can tell.
Go with the posi. and 373 or 411 will be nice with the overdrive trans.
Correct on the caliper.
