Default key turns but it feels like nothing is there

ok so you know when you put the key in and you turn it you feel the click for it to be in the on position? and then you turn it to start the car? on mine it feel free. i put the key in and it can move all around and it doesn't turn on or start. We removed the switch on the bottom of the steering column and with a small screw driver we clicked it to the on position and pushed it one more time and started the car. my question is this, does the column have a rod or something that when you push they key it pushes the switch? if so where can i find this part? or do i need to buy a new column for this?

There should be a rod.

a junk yard should have what you need.
