new owner looking for vin information
I recently purchased a 71 chevelle SS 454, and I would like to know more about "what" my car is supposed to be. I was very disappointed when I found out some of the misrepresantions that were made by the dealership. What I'm mainly interested in is, is this a clone, and was it a 454 orginanally? Not really interested about the options, or color, I'm sure it has been painted a different color. Would appreciate any information concerning these questions and concerns. Thanks Rick

Nothing in the vin will tell you if it is an SS. I know in 72 if you had a W in the vin then it was a 454 engine and it only came in a SS model. The SS was available on all V8's in 71 except for the 307 engine. The SS model was an option and you need a build sheet to know for sure. Here are some ways to tell if it is a true SS in the links below.
Here's how to break down your vin http://chevellestuff.net/1971/vin.htm http://www.chevelles.com/shop/ss_ident.html http://chevellestuff.net/1971/71ss.htm
