Door adjustment
I am in the process of replacing the door latch, passenger side, in my 64 Malibu convert and want to align the door but have run into the following problem. I have loosened the six hex head bolts on the hinges but the door will not move at all. I am trying to raise the back of the door. Am I doing something wrong here ? I do not want to force the door and break the hinges.
Should I be trying to change the alignment using the philip head screws on the hinges instead. Thank you. |

Thanks Ray. I hope so.
I should add that the six hexhead bolts screw into the body and the philips screws go into the door. I was able to purchase the special wrench, part # J-21550. used, off of e-bay and it is worth its weight in gold. Thanks |

The bolts in the A pillar don't move a bunch. The ones in the door are the ones you adjust. For want of a better metaphor, think of a refrigerator door. If you move the upper hinge out, away from the car, the back of the door will come up as it closes. A little goes a long way here. 1/16" at the hinge could move the door up 1/8"-3/16" at the latch. You'll also be moving other metal around to cover up the fact that you moved the door around. Get the door to fit and close properly, then move the fenders and hood around to line up to the doors. I hope this helps.

Door adjustment
Thanks Alan,
I'll be adjusting the door today. Any idea why GM used iron hinges on the bottom and aluminum at the top ? |
