Default Powerglide question

Recently bought a 72 that's has a powerglide. Car was a non runner but was able to get it running and it drove, just not great. Ended up dropping the tranny pan, fluid looked good no major junk. Was told to put type f fluid in, major improvement in driving for a quick once around the block and then it lost forward and reverse. Acted like it was low on fluid and would barely move with some revs. Fluid is full of material now. Had anyone run into this. Was it caused by the type f? I've never had a trans act better and fail so fast. Any idea what went wrong?
