M21 troubles
Lately, once in a while usually after I've been running for awhile, trans won't go into reverse, grinding. Pop it into first for a second and problem is gone. Yesterday did a 150mile run up to Maine, no troubles. When I headed home, trans didn't want to go into any gear easily. clutch pedal mashed to the floor. At one point, i could only start it in 1st with the clutch in. Checked fluid level, no issue. Checked clutch (picture) and there seems to be enough left. So I'm thinking this is a clutch pedal adjustment. Worried about why this happened after a long drive. I'm a newbie with this car and this m21 transmission. I'm I thinking right?

Also, in 4th gear feels like clutch is slipping when i'm on the gas...

I would try adjusting the clutch. The grinding may be from the clutch releasing to close to the floor. On the slipping you may not have enough free travel at the top of the pedal (should have at least 1") or it may be time for a new clutch.

thanks for the reply. less than an inch of play for sure. ill try adjusting. does the clutch look like it's close to done?

It's hard to tell by the picture. If you do need to get a new clutch buy nothing but new stay away from rebuilt stuff.

Taking a look at the zbar and planning adjustments for tomorrow. Noticed that the bushing at either end of the zbar are shot definitely. Previous owner stuffed a nice 427 crate motor in this car, the headers are practically in contact with the zbar itself. Wondering if heat from the headers over a 150mile trip, trashed the bushings and threw off clutch adjustment...

Thanks for the reply shadowgray396. I'm looking for a way to either shield that area from the heat or, wrap the header pipe in that area. I can't be the first with the 427 lump and this issue. Maybe the fix is a reroute of the header on that side... |

closure at last!!!
I get my 67 back today finally.
The tally: clutch one retainer clip trans end of drive shaft missing, replaced. this one could've ended my day badly. weld on zbar was failing, the part that reaches up to the clutch pedal, replaced. header contacting zbar, removed, dimpled. tons of space now. hoping for an extended Indian summer before she's winterized. |
