383 build question
Hey guys my uncle came to me and asked to build a 383. I was taught in the old school that you take a 400 crank with a 400 flywheel and crank pulley. I called around and scored a block and a 400 crank. I didn't buy it yet from him but he is holding it for me. I was doing research and then called the machine shop. The guy at the shop told me "save your money and get the new 383 crank that is made to fit 350 blocks and you can use all your 350 flywheel and crank pulley" have any of you guys ever built a 383 or have a 383 built? what parts did you use? and any info you can give me would be great!

I've built many 383s...including the hyd roller project I'm presently involved in. We never build any 350s anymore considering 383s cost the same to build.
I've ALWAYS used a NEW 383 rotating assembly...including a 3.75" stroker crank that has 350 main sized bearing journals. Wouldn't even consider using an old cast 400 crank!! With it you'll need to run main bearing spacers. For a moderate performance build...the Scat 9000 series cast cranks are perfect. We've drag raced these for years without any issues. Too bad you're not closer...I've got an extra 1pc seal block that has provisions for both a factory roller setup AND a mechanical fuel pump boss (rare)...all machining is done, bored, finish honed, align honed, stroker clearanced, new ARP main bolts, cleaned, Dura-bond cam bearings and brass freeze plugs installed and it's ready to assemble.

I'm going to echo what Bill said, don't waste time with a factory 400 crank. Scat is ok, avoid the cat cranks.(eBay junk)
I have had a few 383s, and helped build a few for friends. They make good power even with basic parts.

Too bad we didn't know anyone heading North for the holidays...shipping this would be a pain.
I'd sell it to a fellow Chevelle guy for $600. These make for nice, budget hyd roller motors...just need the easily found factory "spider", retainers, and lifters... then use a step nose cam of your choice. 1pc seal stroker cranks and complete rotating assemblies are easily found. The assembly I'm using for the 383 project presently in the works I bought a Scat 9000 crank, Scat H-beam 5.7" rods, and Probe dish pistons. Also came with bearings, rings, flex plate, and dampner...fully balanced with sheet...for under $1K delivered. Dish pistons were chosen because I'm using a fresh pair of Sportsman II heads that are 200cc with 64cc chambers and I want to keep the compression reasonable...under 10.0 The roller blocks with a mechanical fuel pump boss are hard to find...most all factory roller motors were fuel injected so the bosses weren't functional.

Scat internal balanced crank. scat H beam 7/16 cap screw rods.SRP pistons.
The whole kit can be had from scat and balenced by them. If your gona run nitrous over 150hp go with 5.7 rod.im runing 6inch. The other alternative is a 391in screemer..400 block 350 scat crank. Lots of people run the lightweight cast9000 series crank.800 hp plus. |
