Torque Connverter
Im in need of some direction as to what size stall converter to run. I have a 454 bored over with mid range flat tappet cam, Aluminum Heads, and 10:5:1 pistons. Rear end gears are 3:73, and the Carb is a 650 holley, and the transmission is a Th400, the weight of the car is roughly 4,000lbs. I was told by the builder the torgue output should be in the 450 range. I think the current stall is about 2200 and I just dont think Im getting anywhere near the potential out of that motor set up as I should. ANY help would be grreatly appreciated!

Mostly street driving?
You can get away with up to around 3000 on the street... make sure you have a good trans cooler.

My '67 is very similar...454 +.030", 10.4 cr, warm HR cam, TH400, 3.73 gears, car weighs 3850 lbs
I had JW build me a TQ convertor...stalls right at 3000 as was specified. VERY reasonably priced and super quick delivery for a custom built convertor. Very nice, streetable setup. Call Eric at... http://www.racewithjw.com/about.php

The higher the tq output of an engine, the higher the rpm of stall. That didn't really come out right. A converter that flashes at 2000 behind a mild sbc will stall much higher behind a mild bbc...
I suggest a B&M Holeshot 3000, regardless...with a good cooler. |

FYI...I paid much LESS for a custom built to my specific application 11" convertor from JW than Summit sells that one size fits all B&M Holeshot. BTW...JW isn't some fly-by-night outfit...they're the creator of the Ultra-Bell. |

Thanks Bill. If I ever get to changing the rear gear in my 72, I think a new converter is going to be in order...a 2600 would be nice. I'll make sure I check them out. I know that some people have bad luck with holeshot converters, but my buddies and I have pretty good luck with them, and with his (the OP) cam/gear, a 3000 sounds about right.
