Default Adjustable Clutch Rod installation ?

I am trying to figure out how to install the adjustable clutch rod according to the Service manual. On my 72 Chevelle, all parts from the clutch pedal to the clutch fork and a 621 bell housing are original GM parts. In the first pic, the adjustable rod is located on the opposite of the Z-bar according to the manual. If I put it on the correct side, it will not contact the clutch fork. I have check my parts against other's parts and nothing seem to damaged or bent. And the motor mounts and transmission mount are fairly new and solid.
If anyone has any thoughts, I would greatly appreciate it.

Everything looks correct except as noted in the first picture. What do you mean it won't contact the clutch fork, too short? It sure looks like you have plenty of adjustment left.

When the adjustable rod is located on the correct side, it will line up outside the clutch fork socket and will not make contact. It seems to me that the Z-bar needs to get closer to the engine so the adjustable rod will be in-line with the clutch fork socket.

Well I still don't see anything real obvious although it looks like the clutch fork is pretty far forward. If the fork were farther back it would pivot out closer to the position you need to be. Are you sure the fork is locked into the throwout bearing properly? If it was sitting on the back edge of the bearing instead of slipped into the ring that would push the other end of the fork forward quite a bit.

I agree with you on the clutch fork being forward. That is why I paid special attention to getting the throw out bearing in correctly and rechecking the clutch fork ball stud. I have tried to find pics of other Chevelles and to date have not found any. Hopefully someone will let me know about the clutch fork. Thanks a lot for your help Hank.

Maybe I can get a pic of mine this weekend. The rod on mine is adjusted out all most to the end. Could be you have a tall/long throwout bearing and need a short one. What kind of clutch setup do you have.

I have a 168 tooth factory flywheel and the short throwout bearing. The pressure plate and clutch plate I bought at NAPA and should be a stock replacement. So I assume they are not GM parts.
Thanks again.

I have the wiring harness out my car right now and couldn't get a picture. Too close, the camera wouldn't focus. Not enough room crawling under the car and I can't jack it up where it sits now.

Thanks for the effort. For now I have an extra Z-Bar in which I bent the arm so the adjustable rod will move perpenticular to the clutch fork in the correct position. This fall the engine comes out so I will investigate much further. I am tired of laying on the garage floor.
Good luck with the wiring project. That was my project last fall and installing power windows.

I was just looking at the picture again. It looks like the push rod is angled away from the transmission to hit the clutch fork. If mounted on the other side of Z bar it won't angle towards the trans and hit the fork?
