One of the lower performance "RV" type cams would work fine...Summit offers a few cam & lifter kits at a reasonable price.
Something like this one...or the SUM-1102...

I wouldn't go any bigger.

Before going to the trouble of putting a cam in a 307 I would find a 350 motor.

Tight LSA and overlap is what makes it sound cool to most people. (Think of the old "3/4 race" cam) Doesn't help performance in a stock engine though.

Also, split pattern camshafts are your friend with the limitations of the factory cylinder heads.

I know I put a bigger cam in a stock 307 at some point. If I recall, I threw the timing chain and upon tear down, found all kinds of damage. I about wore out my spare parts pile to get it running again. I think the cam I had was around the .460" lift range. It sounded ok, but didn't have much of a lope to it. The .488 cam had a slight lope to it. That was in a 327 though. That .46-something cam, dual plane Edelbrock intake, 600 Holley and a set headers really woke up that old boat anchor. The thing to keep in mind is don't over build the engine. The cam is about THE MOST important component in the entire car. EVERY PART from there to the back bumper have to be matched.

Cant wait to see it .I may be willing to part with a 350 engine that I recently disassembled as I decided to nuy a crate motor for my truck. I tore it down to change out the cam to a stock one and changed my mind .

A 307 is just a 327 with smaller pistons. I'd keep the 307 over a 350. Look at the Comp cams high energy cam that has .212 duration @ .050. Should wake it up nicely! Bout $180 with lifters. Slap on an Edelbrock performer intake as well, and a 600cfm carb
