Default alternator question

Is it normal for an alternator to be hot to the touch after normal driving? I also noticed the alt dash light is dimly lit for the initial 5-10 minutes after start up. Battery is new.

They do get hot while generating electricity. The bigger the load the hotter they get. Have you checked the voltage with car running? Should be close to 14v if the alt is charging properly.
