"New" Seats!!
Well the project has started! My '71 Malibu had the bench seat, and since I am going to resto-mod it, I wanted buckets that were a little different.
My brother and I were combing through the boneyards here in Vegas just to see what kind of jewels we could find. We went to several different ones and couldn't find too much. We were on the hunt for something completely different, but kept a close eye out for some buckets. We finally went to one that specialized in just japanese cars, and there it was. A 1980ish Porsche 928. I couldn't recall hearing about anybody using Porsche seats in a Chevelle so I was instantly thinking "Oooh, that would be different!" It had been gutted down to almost nothing. Sitting on the frame rails, it didn't look promising, but we looked anyway. As we opened the door, we were delighted to see both front buckets sitting there, with minimal wear and tear(No more than expected for a car thats 30 yrs old.) Power seats to boot! I Had a budget of around $200 for boneyard seats, but I was a little worried that the proprietor would jack the price up for these. I walked up to the front and asked the guy how much the Porsche seats were. He asked "The 928?" I said yeah. He looks at me and says "Everything that you pull yourself is $10 bucks a pop. If you pull 'em both it's $20. I was completely flabbergasted to be honest. We proceeded to pull the seats and run. We now have the bench out and the driver seat in and hopefully in the next few days we can get the other one in. I will post pics of the driver seat later as well as the uninstalled passenger seat. Just wanted to share the progress!! |

Very good story. I am in the same boat and budget. Gives me some inspuration to look in junk yards here local.
Was it hard to fab a mounting bracket? Look forward to pictures.

Sorry the pics arent up yet.. My 7 month old daughter decided to be cranky all night. I "should" have them up tonight. The brackets weren't too difficult, just time consuming to get all the dimensions right. We had to figure out how to make them to ensure they cleared the motors hanging off the bottom, and making them level on that floor was no easy chore.

I passed a few today when I was out visiting shops for work and it crossed my mind but now I'm really motivated. I just think it's cool to dig through junk yards anyways, no telling what kind of cool stuff you can find. Definitely can't wait for pics!

I like combing the junkyards. I happen across something neat every time I go. Porsche seats in a Chevelle. Now that's a new one. |
