You do nice work Ray. When the inspector doesn't show, do you get to charge him a no-show fee?

Nice work Ray. Wish you were closer, I probably have 1,000 ft of CAT 5E cable in the shed. You can buy the wall plates and connectors at Lowes or HD. They also sell the crimper to install the connectors on the end of the cable. Some of the connectors are color coded so you know how to put the wires in the connector, there's 4 pairs. A signal and ground in each pair but they don't remain in pairs. You have to swap the ground between two of the pairs. Here's a link that shows how the wires get paired up. https://www.google.com/search?q=cat5...x-a&channel=sb
Run all the cables back to where your modem will be. If the modem doesn't have enough sockets for all the cables run a patch cable from the modem to a switch then plug the cables into the switch. If you need a switch PM me your address and I'll send you one. I'll look, not sure but I probably have a mess of connectors somewhere too. I wired every room in this house with RG6 coax and CAT 5E years ago before everything started going wireless. Also wired multiple computer labs in my prior life. Based on the work you've done so far I'm sure you can handle wiring for internet. |

Thanks Hank for the tip. I don't have a switch. Just got home last night and our main house lost power on the main floor. Not a breaker, so some place something has come loose. No I did not wire this house. Lol. It was built long before I moved in. Looks Like Iam going to have to track the problem down today.

You may not need a switch Ray. depending on how many drops you run and how many connections your cable modem will support. We have AT&T Uverse and the modem has room for 4 connections plus wireless.
Did you lose one leg of the 220? Possibility if most of main floor is on 1 leg. Last edited by Hank70SS; 11-22-2014 at 02:32 PM. |

220 works and everything works in the house but one circuit. Spent all day trying to find the problem. Still have not been able to find how the power is getting to the plugs and the outside lights. Wondering if I have a hidden junction box somewhere I have not found. Been in the crawl space and attic with no luck.

Could you have one of those GFI circuits that got tripped?

No GIF in this circuit. Its some where between the breaker panel and the living room. About a 20' run. Power line run throught the floor joist inside of the house. Going to go get a tester that sends a signal down the wire so I trace it.

Finally found the problem at 10 pm tonight. I have spent hours searching for the problem. It was as far away as it could be. Ended up being on the third floor of the house in the attic. When the attic fan and light was installed over 10 years ago, the hot lead that was tapped into was the living room circuit. Found a loose wire in the switch to the attic fan, which was the hot lead to the living room. What a pain in the $$$ to find.

Glad you found it. It's crazy how they run the wiring in houses. I plugged a pressure washer into an outside outlet and it ran for a second then stopped. I plugged into a different outlet and went on. A few minutes later Lynda came out and said the lights are out in the basement. The outlet I first used was on the outside of the family room which is over a crawlspace. They used the push in terminals on the back instead of the screw lugs and the outlet burned. The wiring does not go from the basement to the crawl space. It must come from above, either from between the 1st and 2nd stories or from the 2nd story down. Then back up, over to the main level then back down to the basement which is where the breaker panel is. Sounds like the long way around to wire the basement when the breaker panel is right there.

I hear you. Can't figure why they went to the third level of the house from the basement, back down to the main level. It's a straight shot over to the living room wall. Wire was cheap back then I guess. Lol
