and they were the number at wheels right? if so with an auto the drive train takes 20% out... putting the motor at about 400hp.
without cam numbers and knowing make/model of heads no way to know what was left on the table... 400hp out of a 454 isn't gr8 but remember the LS5 454 in 1970 made only 360hp! the ls6 450hp. by 72 it was making only 270hp. i think we get caught up in Magazine builds and Speed channel builds 400hp from a motor is ok for the street... and more then most these cars ever came with from GM |

yeah i know that the ls5 made 360 but the thing is he was saying he was going to put down 550 or more. all i can tell you is he had new H beam rods crank polished new pistons alum heads and he was saying his combo was going to be 11 to 1 and to see him get so much less he was not happy at all! and then after seeing my car get the power i got out my ls1 with a 6 speed manual trans he is almost ready to get an ls1 for himself but he is in the same boat as me no one wants to buy 454's for the money we put in it. Hell i am trying to sell my whole swap with motor and trans for 2 grand and cant get it. like i was trying to say with him is that its just amazing that you can get that little and spend so much. but then again it could be like everyone said it was just the wrong combo. as for me i just want my chevelle running..lol but i am not planning on spending a whole lot of money on my 454. if i blow my motor i think for the money i would just buy a create motor. which i told him the money and time he spent on his 454 he could of gotten a create 454 or 496 but thats just me i guess

Ya definitely something is off, he could do a compression test to see if he is getting 11:1...
i don't think it would be possible to get so little HP with 11:0 compression even with the worse possible cam... maybe the wrong heads where shipped? hard to tell if maybe got like 121cc head vs. 110cc ... and used a thick head gasket... cam could be clocked off a lil... 400hp motor isn't bad just not near his project 500+ if he ever figures it out let us know i would love to know. |

I kind of chuckle when I hear people say they have 11:1 pistons, etc. They forget that that SCR (static compression ratio), is figured with a specific piston to deck height, compressed gasket thickness, and head cc. I have seen some older blocks check in with .060" + piston to deck clearance before being decked. And, SCR is only one half of the story - the DCR is very important too. The camshaft will affect that number. The low power is surely due to mismatched parts. To make 550 RW through a stalled auto with any engine requires a stout combination. Big, inflated dyno numbers don't equal a fast car. I put a beating on many cars that dyno'd higher than my old LS1 Z28. Combination and attention to detail are everything.
