Default Alternator mounting

I have a 1967 malibu 327 auto no ac
the gm assembly manual shows the upper mounting bracket on the rear of the alternator ear and the bolt, washer, and lock washer going from the rear of the ear.
my car has the mount bkt in the front of the alternator ear and the bolt and lock washer going in from the front of the ear.
which is correct?

any help would be appreciated,
thanks,
mark

I have a 70 so I can't really help. Just one question. Wouldn't moving the bracket from one side of the ear to the other change the pulley alignment?

Original set up the bolt came through the front of the alt and went into the exhaust manifold. That is the lower pivot. Front bracket went from the intake to alt. That is the sliding mount.

Sounds like it has been changed over the years. They sold adapters that bolted to the front 2 exhaust manifold bolts way back. This provided the mounting point if the manifold was changed or it had headers.

My first car was a 66 chevelle 327 4 speed. I am very familiar with this clusterfrick of engineering.
