Default Looking for opinions

About 7 years ago my stepdad gave me his 1969 Chevelle SS 396 4 speed convertible. He bought the car from a buddy in 1973. In the late 80s he tore the car down to restore it but his late wife was diagnosed with cancer. Obviously he cared for her and forgot about the car. So the car sat tore down for nearly 30 yrs so it is very rough.

Well I am now at a point in my life where I can build the car. My problem is he can't find any of the paperwork. The motor was replace in 70 or 71 (he can't quite remember) because the original motor was blown. I ran the engine code it is a 1969 396 and says GM pass Hi Perf on the side.

Of course I want to say the car will never be for sale but you never know what the future holds

Looking for opinions on if it is worth spending est. 40k+ to restore a car that I can't show to be a true SS.

I avoid the WIW discussions. Mine isn't a SS and it was in much worse shape when I started on it. To me these cars are not about money it is for the love of having the car.

To be honest don't try to sell the car. If it is done right people will annoy the crap out of you all the time trying to buy it for good money. Try to actively sell it and you have to deal with the scoffers, tire kickers and likes of the paperwork crowd.

I have often wished I had done a different make of car because most of the chevelle owners are just jerks these days. Mopar and furd are not like that. Congrats on building and having a nice car. None of the you have the wrong bracket or the stamping is wrong crap. Finding fault talking smack and picking it apart is all 98% are about these days.

They have no clue what hot rodding is or ever was about.

It is a opinion nothing more nothing less.

Thanks. I'm not really a chevy guy or Ford guy. I own both & love both. I hate selling anything these days. It's always "I knew a guy who sold one better for way less"

The only reason I brought up $$ was I thought he had the numbers matching motor, trans, etc... Today I picked up the block and it's a 69 396 block & has a Kansas VIN just not my cars VIN. I was kinda disappointed when I saw it.

My car is a true SS according to the build sheet but it's not the original motor. Is it perfect, no. But the car is for me not for anyone else. It gets lots of good comments when I take it out around town. Shows, I couldn't car less. If people want to pick it apart I don't care. Most of those people drove in to the show in a minivan. If you want to spend the money to restore it, do it for you, not for anyone else. I don't care what you do, some self proclaimed expert will find fault with it.

i see an "L" by itself on the middle of the tag
word is most of the 69 SS cars from Kansas have this "L" on them
alot of them; but not all,
not a definitive sign; but still good

paint code 51 = dusk blue metalic with black top

here is a link to chevellestuff
they have a huge database with chevelle info like this
http://chevellestuff.net/1969/69ss.htm

if you really want a bbc chevelle convertible
keep and fix it.. how much you will spend is kinda dependent on your abilities
that car looks to be a good project, but if not for you; let it go to another
that can save and finish the car

i really loved the 68 convertible i redid, it did not get fully finished
the car was a fun investment for me...

i agree with Chevymaher.
do the car because you want to, and maybe cause it has personal implications, being it was in your family. there is no way you will get it to please everyone else, nor should you have to. Each car is different. you finish it to please you. numbers match or not, they are still great cars, a lot depends on your time, budget, and what your expectations are. good luck!

What Kevin said. Only way to have these cars is doing what you want. Let the rest suck eggs.

I am old and from the era when these things were new. Nobody wanted a numbers matching car back then. Buy them and immediately modify them. Those clowns live in a survivor dream world. There were no survivors in the late 70's They get a old restoration and think it is original.

LOL this reminds me of the thread why is there no traffic on this site. It is easy most are nasty people who cut down everyone else's cars. That isn't tolerated here. Why join to just be banned on your first few post .

Anywho just enjoy the car make it your own. Trust me on this one. In real life not on the internet. The general public could care less if it is original and love them. It is instant celebrity status driving one.

Mine don't even run yet. I have mini car shows people hear about it from friends and come to see it. I had a older gentleman from calif who was in town make a special trip with my dad just to see it.

Just do your own thing and enjoy the experience. Let the other crowd just make each other miserable and ignore them.

i will say that my convertible got way more attention from so many people
every time i had it out, people hanging out of cars trying to talk and give
thumbs up...
my ratty hardtop still gets attention also
its kinda strange, but nice to know that people still like seeing 50year old cars
if you want to fix, keep and enjoy it, Just Do It...
