Default Cant get a bite

So along with the new harness I picked up some odds and ends to stick under the hood. The issue that I am running into is the oil sending unit. The one that is in there is brass and right next to the firewall so I cant get a bite on it and when I do the metal just keeps flaking off when I can get ahold of it with the vice grips. I cut a notch into the top of it to get a flat tip in there but the brass just snapped off when I went to get it off and dont really want to tap and dye it. Is it worth drilling it out with a smaller bit and picking the pieces out. Anyone have any ideas?
