Default Manuel convertible top???

I own a '64 Malibu with a mechanical convertible top. Last Tuesday I put the top down for the first time since I bought the car in October. I could just about raise it to the up position that night. I had to literary stand on the back seat and pull with all my might to get it up. My '64 Malibu SS that I owned in the '70's also had a mechanical top that worked perfectly with one person standing by the car.

My question is, are there any adjustments on the two springs that help raise the top? I can't find anything in the manuel on those springs other than how to remove them. Any info would help before I go inside there to look. I know the springs exist because I saw them there when I removed the quarter panels.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I found the problem. There was a pivot point in the mechanism that hadn't seen lube probably in it's lifetime. There is also a track that the springs are attached to that runs inside of one another. They were also very dry. All lubed up and working fine!
