what you mean motor to frame? I understand cleaning the ground wire, which I believe is in front of the tank, that is what I jiggled and then it worked again

Well the sender is grounded to the frame. Now to get the ground back to the battery. The frame is isolated by rubber bushings from the body so no ground there. Following the ground path back to the battery it is frame to block in front. Then block to battery.

Other possible paths are Frame to body and then body back to frame in the front. Point was there are a bunch of grounds and it has multiple paths to travel to the battery. But they all corrode at about the same speed. So just do them all once you find one bad.

So if the front ground is rusted in half or bad connection. It is still a intermittent open circuit.

But it seems by jiggling the wire to make it work. You did find the worst offender in the path of the ground.
