Repainting the SS Wheels (Correct colors?)`
Hey Guys,
I'm going to get my wheels blasted and repaint them. My question is what are the correct colors to use? I know the back of the rim is a different color than the front. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Brian

The backs are gray, believe it's called Dove Gray. NPD sells what is supposed to be the correct color. Silver is Argent Silver. The dark area is up for debate. Some say it's a charcoal gray, close to black. Others say it's a slightly lighter color gray. I have seen a few un-restored wheels on survivor cars and they were the lighter charcoal gray. Other's claim original wheels that are the very dark, almost black, gray. Could be slightly different colors based on the wheel manufacturer, I believe there were at least 3 of them. NPD also carries the dark gray for the centers.
Spray the backs first, don't cover the slots when doing the fronts if you want the factory correct look. Original wheels did have over-spray on the backs from painting the fronts. How much to have your wheels blasted? I have an extra and have been meaning to restore a set. |

Here's a link when I did mine
http://s777.photobucket.com/albums/y...0Build/Wheels/ If you are looking for paint in a spray can, here are some numbers. I used the Plasti Kote 2 years ago and it has held up great. Krylon's Dove Gray (#1605). Dove gray valspar #165816 Plasti-kote also has dove gray #364,its also a good match NPD "AP-12010N Paint, Rally wheel finish, inner gray Or Paint code for Argent Silver for mixed paint Ditzler DE-8568 DuPont 42153 Krylon makes a perfect silver paint that is identical to the original GM argent silver wheels. Called dull aluminum. Part #1403. Most vendor sell spray cans for all three colors for SS wheel restoration. I had all my wheel sand blasted first before I put any paint on them. Ray

Ray, almost looks like the spokes are a darker silver then the outside rim on your wheels. Maybe it's just the picture.

Motor Wheel for sure, I think Kelsey-Hayes and one other, can't recall the name right now. Manufacturer was stamped next to valve stamped, M for Motor Wheel, not sure what the others were.

Hey Brian..If you need a wheel for reference, my spare has original paint on it. It has never been on a car, so it's as close to factory as you can get. You can take it with you for a while if you need to.

So far, I have the argent silver and the dove gray. I talked to a friend of mine from the other site (Donnie1) he had a paint store mix up the correct dark charcol met. It looks black with a hint of metallic. He has compared it to an original unrestored wheel and its a dead match. I'm gonna buy one or two cans from him. Its in a spray bomb, just what I was looking for. He told me there is also two different styles of paint stencil kits available. He said the one from Year One looks like it would be the easiest to use. It comes with five "pie shaped parts to cover the area between the spokes after the black has been painted, then you would paint the argent silver on the front. I'll post pics when I get them all painted up.
