Chevelle upgrades
After 4th gear (overdrive) started to slip in my transmission, I started to formulate a game-plan on how best to fix it... I concluded that you cannot fix an automatic trans. It's a physical impossibility for an auto to not be boring.
I always wanted a T56 6-speed, and the most logical way to acquire one, just happened to be a used example found on ebay with a modded all aluminum LS1 attached to it. So I got a little help from my garage buddy to start the disassembly process. This is now the 3rd time I've pulled a perfectly good engine out of this car. I don't know what any of this has to do with swapping a transmission, but it will have working A/C next summer. I get sidetracked easily... Thank God for tolerant wives... she has to park outside all winter.

Damn Derek!! You're not wasting any time!! I wondered when that LT1 was going to get yanked. What are the specs on that new mill?

I don't really know. It's been modded, but I haven't taken it apart to figure out what's inside yet. I do know that it has upgraded intake, injectors, throttle-body, MAF sensor, and headers. Also, the heads have been studded, so I know they've been off too. This stuff was all a nice surprise, as I didn't know about any of it when I was bidding.

Putting it back together should be easy, paying for the parts is going to be the hard part.

Nice looking project. I keep thinking back to that Chevy High Performance Crate Engine Shootout article in the yellow mule Chevelle. They ended up getting some wheel lift with the LSX style engines with very little difficulty and excellent streetable manners. Must be nice having the T56 going in there, I'm guessing you are sticking with the hydraulic clutch? What kind of controller are you going to use? GM 0411 PCM or are you going with an aftermarket unit? Are you going to be lucky enough to reuse the existing fuel system in the car already and are the LS headers going to clear the A-body? Sorry for the questions, sometimes I get nosy and jump into other people's projects. Either way, good luck and it already comes with the blue anodized shifter base!

I'm going to stick with the F-body PCM, and have the VATS removed.
I've heard the F-body headers will fit an A-body, but they're pretty rusty, so I bought some Edelbrock ceramic coated stainless steel stepped headers. Yes on the Hydraulic clutch. Fuel system I wasn't happy with anyway (Tanks Inc. drop-in sump in stock tank), and it'll only support about 400hp... I plan on making about 500hp, so I'll be upgrading to one of those new "Vaporworx" tanks from Rick's so I don't have to worry about starvation problems on a roadcourse. It's way expensive, but I did it the "cheap" way last time, and was never happy with it. That shifter is a B&M... I hope I can use it, I like the throw and the "defined" feel of the gates.

I just pulled the oil pan off... I knew this LS1 was modded when I bought it, but had no idea...
It's a STROKER!!!!!! Eagle H-beam rods, ARP studded mains, ARP rod bolts, and some nice little notches on the bottom of the cylinder wall, along with the windage tray being shimmed indicative of a longer stroke. Seriously, when I bought it on ebay, the only "mods" that I knew about was headers (which won't fit my car anyway) and an SLP MAF sensor. When the guy pulled it, he called to tell me the heads were studded. Jeff (piette) picked it up for me, and he started looking it over, and noticed the LS6 intake and Ford injectors. I still don't know what cam is in it, but I should have that figured out this week.
