Few things. Blew 2nd gear out of my transmission so 4L80 swap is being done. Swapped in hydroboost so lower vacuum requirements allowed me to contact Chris Straub for a bit more aggressive cam. Cam swap was just completed in photo above. Needless to say, car is in pieces right now

I have no idea what you are talking about, but it sounds most impressive! Great job.

fleming23 09-07-2012 09:17 PM

It means far too much money has been spent, again!

flash 09-07-2012 10:34 PM

They are all money pits ,but you cant take your money with you so enjoy it while you can .I just hope I live long enough to see my truck come home in one piece.

shadowgray396 09-07-2012 10:47 PM

Hope all turns out ok for you.

I am ashamed to say I have done nothing to my Chevelle today ,Ive actually been slacking this whole summer with car stuff .Ive only entered 2 shows and gone to a couple of cruise ins ,just have not been into the cars this year with the heat and humidity . I am however looking forward to our trip next month with Chuck and the gang.

flash, with all the heat and humidity that you guys have had to contend with this summer, it is very understandable why you haven't taken the car out a lot. Besides, sometimes the car needs a break too.

Ms Grumpy 09-08-2012 09:01 PM

I loaded my car onto my transmission guys trailer and said good bye to her. She is on her way Cincinnati to have the trans fixed. Hopefully she will be home in a week.

It will be good as new in a week and you will be out burning the rubber off it.

shadowgray396 09-08-2012 10:37 PM

I haven't even had my cover off my car in over a month. It will be at my son's wedding on Sept 14 for him to drive off in.

Eric,

How did that Hydroboost go in? Fairly easy? and how much did it set you back?

The swap was really quite simple. You remove your master & booster and swap the new unit in place. Then it is just a matter of running some braided lines to the power steering pump and teeing a return line in and running it back. I only had to change one of my brake hard lines from the installed power to a pre-bent manual master line (from the master to the proportioning valve on the frame.)

Honestly the most difficult part of the entire swap for me was getting the hydraulic line ends to seat correctly. If I did it again I would take the lines back out and drive down the road to a place that makes hydraulic lines and have them do the ends for me which would have saved lots of frustration.

Price is pretty high with the Hydratech systems I purchased (around $950 for extra long line set, show finish & new master) but you can do it for much cheaper if you go junk yard shopping. I believe you can source nearly everything you need from a Chevy Astro IIRC and have a complete system for just a couple hundred.

I think I still need to install a manual proportioning valve inline to the rears as they will lock up way too early. Just need to dial out a little pressure.

John 09-10-2012 12:20 PM

Did you consider a Vacuum pump?

John 09-10-2012 12:21 PM

shoot me a picture of the hydroboost, and the lines to the PS pump. Thanks

BillsCamino 09-10-2012 01:48 PM

Took advantage of the cool, fall like weather this morning ...
I installed a rebuilt pair of boxed rear LCA's I got from a buddy on TC, added a 7/8" rear sway bar, swapped in a front 1" sway bar (bigger dia than the wimpy stock one), dropped in a JGC steering box and new PS pump w/hoses (the '66 was factory manual steering & brakes).
Next up is removing the headers and installing cast iron manifolds w/stock full duals and a disc brake conversion.
Hope to see James Hinshaw at one of the Chevelles show I'm attending later this month to order a few interior items...gonna replace the Sedan's headliner, rear package tray, and front/rear seat covers.
Then we be lookin' good....

Probably one of the few who actually remove headers to replace with stock cast manifolds!

My car is sitting at the shop right now but this site was very helpful during mt planning stages of the swap. I did basically the exact same installation.

I am one of the "weird" few souls that has done that.

flash 09-10-2012 08:30 PM

I also removed the headers from my 72 chevy truck and went with stock manifolds .

earthquake68 09-10-2012 10:44 PM

Not too weird. I'm putting manifolds on my '64 too.

Today I got my solid mounts made. 20 years ago, I had Moroso solid mounts. I could NOT find mounts that work. The ones that they said were for the car were too short and I couldn't get the through bolts in.

I used cold rolled 3/16" steel plate. (like the aftermarket mounts) they came out decent enough. They fit perfect, so I can't complain a whole lot.

shadowgray396 09-10-2012 10:53 PM

So are you building a drag car? Just wonder why solid mounts.

earthquake68 09-10-2012 11:03 PM

The '64 frame stands won't allow the later model safety mounts to be used. The first car ripped 3 sets of stock mounts in a week and a half. This engine makes more power than the first car. I thought about urethane mounts, but the application for a '64 Chevelle is wrong, ...just like the Mr. Gasket solid mounts. The frame stands on my car are stock, but the applications for engine mounts are incorrect. The engine mounts that they say are for my car are all too short and I can't get the through bolts in. The mounts I made fit perfectly.

carpoor 09-11-2012 07:20 PM

Spent the first half of the day cleaning bolts and brackets, then painting them. I wanted to have the engine and transmission in today, but it just wasn't ready. I am now shooting for this weekend. I have a major exam coming up Thursday morning and I need to study tonight and as much as possible tomorrow after work. I have a feeling I will be spending much of Thursday afternoon digging through all the boxes of parts trying to get them all sorted. Then I can grab 1-2 boxes and have everything I need for the engine install close by.

What are you using for a management system to make it shift? The install looks great!

Absolutely love how I can completely control everything now! Can't wait to get it finished and back on the road!

earthquake68 09-12-2012 07:35 AM

Good stuff. Thanks for the link!

Eric ,youre as bad as Bill ,I cant keep up with the 2 of you on your projects .Your car has really gone through some major transformations in a short period of time but it keeps getting better .

Ms Grumpy 09-12-2012 05:04 PM

Thought about mine today. Hoping the work on the trans is going well.

Nah..... Bill seems to be able to flip his about every 6 months. I'm in way over my head on a single car! I keep telling myself, this is the last project. AND Unless I break something I truly intend on enjoying the car for a while after this is all done!

shadowgray396 09-12-2012 11:35 PM

My Daughter and her husband flew in from Orlando Florida today for my sons wedding on Friday and they have not been here since I finished the car. Took the car out tonight for the first time in over a month and ran it throught some gears. Felt good to have it out of the garage. I have been working out of town for the last 6 weeks so it has been covered up for way to long.

carpoor 09-13-2012 06:53 PM

Not much new to see... put the brake lines back in place and reinstalled the clutch for bracket. Shooting for Sunday to install the engine and transmission.

carpoor 09-15-2012 02:37 PM

Spent all morning and most of the afternoon getting the engine and transmission ready to go back in the car tomorrow. Cleaned some parts, hunted down fasteners, etc. All the usual things that we neglect to do in the process.

Started my day off with a pipe plug in the cylinder head that wouldn't budge. It rounded off inside. Tried to chase it with a chisel, bigger mess. Had to drill it out in steps, 3/8 -> 1/2 -> 9/16. Then I folded it from the top center with the chisel. I was actually able to grab it and unthread it by hand once it started to fold. I had the correct tap, so I cleaned the threads and installed the temp sender. I was highly irked, what a waste of time. I wonder why the machine shop neglected to remove it?

earthquake68 09-15-2012 04:39 PM

Oh, ... well, ...that's easy. They saw it starting to round and just left it for you. Your work looks great. I see you're going for a "correct" restoration. I've never had the will power for that. :D

SS Shaun 09-16-2012 01:32 AM

Installed the new clutch today getting ready for the six speed

Thanks Alan, that is a real compliment coming from you. I wish I had your metal work skills, I am still an amateur at 33. I know it takes years to acquire those skills.

My car is "stock appearing." ;) It will idle like "stock", has a "stock" stroke crankshaft, "stock" exhaust manifolds, etc. But, should run well into the 13's on repop poly glass tires. I've built it to look as good as I can get it with my limited work space and resources, and to race in the pure stock drags. When I finally get myself out of this financial slump and get another good job - I hope to build a real stock appearing car for the series. The SA cars have looser rules, that allow stroker engines, head & intake porting, increased compression, roller camshafts, etc. A few of them have gone 9's with stock exhaust manifolds and poly glass tires.

fleming23 09-16-2012 08:46 AM

Worked on tuning the transmission shift points via a laptop.

This 4L80 is a pretty sweet deal! I love being able to make this thing shift as soft and easy as I want when cruising to chirping my big 295 rear tires is as simple as changing a curve on a graph.
