Busy weekend even with a sore foot. Took the car to 2 car shows this weekend. One was for my brother inlaw and the other was a local church down the street.
http://chevelleforum.org/picture.php...pictureid=3482 http://chevelleforum.org/picture.php...pictureid=3481 Looking back this month I have been to a car show every weekend this month. Feel like I have become a car show junkie. Lol It's really been all the free food at them. It's been the first summer that I really have had a chance to enjoy the car driving it. |
Ray ,Im glad you are enjoying the fruits of all your labor and we appreciate the prayers ,she needs all the help we can get her.
|
Got a new toy for the garage and Chevelle. Practice drag strip Christmas tree and controller.

Picked up a car trailer yesterday. I expect to eventually need one, all of the Pure Stock events are in Michigan, NY, NJ, and Maryland. Been trying to convince people that 4-wide at ZMax would be awesome. :D
|
Ray...I love the tree.
Today I scrubbed the floor mats in my car. I have to wonder how they get so dirty. I also cleaned the inside. I will be leaving for the NOCC show on Thurs morning and the weather man says it might rain a little. I will see what the weather say tomorrow morning before I go out and do a good wash. If I have to drive in the rain I might as well wash it when I get to the show. |
Today I filled in the C H E V R O L E T emblem holes on the hood of my wagon. Yesterday I took the motor and Trans out (just sitting in there anyway) and posted the Trans on Craigslist to try and trade for a 3 or 4spd Saginaw.
|
Drove it from Strongsville (Northern Ohio) back home to North Georgia ,about 11 hours ,fun show but its good to be home .
|
removed the broken studs to bolt down my seats :)
|
Took the Chevelle out for a drive, almost at 200 miles. Pulled into the garage at 199.7 miles.
|
Drove it straight home from the NOCC show. Yes, I did not stop and she drove like a dream, all 2 hrs and 45 minutes. :)

Pulled in the driveway about 5 pm yesterday. Thankfully, no problems with the wagon on that 1450 mile round trip. Pretty good for a 43 yr old original engine. No tickets either.....:ntwrthy: |
Trying to stay busy with little projects. Picked up a fan clutch last week, cleaned and painted the fan, and assembled the unit mid week.)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps995cf700.jpg Started to take apart my distributor for cleaning over the weekend. Didn't want to come apart very easy, despite being a low mile take off and shelved for 40+ years. I let it sit a few days with some penetrating oil on the internals. Today, cleaned it all up. Then installed a Moroso recurve kit, and a Petronix III. The built in rev limiter is preset at 5500, should be a good starting point. Factory rating for peak power was at 4000 RPM. When this thing finally hits the rollers, we'll see if the improvements and tweaks moved the power curve any. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps051d07a1.jpg (And yes, I assembled the distributor at the kitchen table. It's hot out in the garage.) |
my new column should be in today so i hope i can swap it out easy :)
|
A little more assembly today...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psa9b37144.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps40a1905d.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psd5d07e7a.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psa007a1f3.jpg However, the radiator my father purchased from NPD several years ago is a piece of crap. It does not fit at all, and is a poor excuse of a "replacement" part. Looking at radiators on Ground Up, but no actual pictures. Does anyone know where I can get a correct radiator that won't cost me an arm and a leg? I need a 4 core, HD cooling, manual transmission, 1972 Chevelle SS 454, |
If you want aluminum call AlumiTech. He's a local guy here in MI. His rads look and fit just like original. Spray it black and no one will know. You'll pay more than copper/brass but he makes a nice radiator. If you want to stick with copper brass, sorry can't help. I have an O'Reilly's (formerly Murray's) 3 core. It fits properly and works great but you want a 4 core and I assume no bungs for an auto trans.

Started wet sanding the over spray off from doing the pinch welds. Finished up the rear window, tomorrow the windshield area. Bought some 3M 3000 grit wet/dry paper. Not really paper, cloth back, some foam with the grit on it. Maybe a 1/16th thick. Man is it nice nice, cuts better than the regular 2000 grit wet/dry and leaves the surface almost ready for wax. A little polishing compound and it should be good.
|
I'd really like that aluminum radiator, but the check for those sort of things in tech. :(
|
Took the Chevelle to a Make a Wish car show today. The show has been able to make 8 kids dreams come true in the last 9 years. All of the proceeds go to the kids. Great cause to support.
|
Looked at the garage through the downpour of rain all day.
|
I adjusted the return spring on the carb and checked the oil ,tightened the valve covers ,getting ready to go to the Heart Of Dixie Show saturday morning.

Decided to change the thermostat AGAIN. The last one stuck again on me last night and so we found one that is high rpm rated.
Has anyone used the Mr Gasket High Performance Gasket ? I used #4364 High Performance 180 degree Thermostat and am hoping that it solves my "thermostat" problem. I have had a couple people who suggested that I use this as opposed to the "regular" ones which sometimes have a hard time because of the high rpm motor and the water pressure it can produce from the water pump. Wondering what you guys think. "Mr. Gasket high performance thermostat fits GM / Ford / AMC. GM/Ford/AMC 180 degrees. SEE catalog for application chart. These high performance thermostats are designed to resist large variations in coolant pressure that occur at high rpm's where coolant temperature and coolant pressure fight for control of the thermostat keeping it from opening at its designated temperature. The balanced HP thermostat features all brass and copper construction, and open at the right temperature regardless of engine RPM." |
after taking 2 weeks off from touching the chevelle because i was so frustrated with it. i went to work on it weds. I got my new master cylinder and it worked like a charm, I was able to bleed the brakes with no issues. so i didn't want to push it by working on the steering column so i left it alone. Last night i said why not lets work on it. Installed the new steering column and put is all back together. Today i will install the steering wheel and clean up all the hoses and wires under the dash :)

Also, base timing should be adjusted so you have a total timing of 36-38 degrees...with the vacuum advance disconnected and hose plugged. With a GM factory style shroud, a 7 blade clutch fan, proper timing, and the stat mentioned above you will NEVER have any overheating issues. |
Bill, I am definitely saving your post. But I will tell you, I have been running even a little cooler than ever, even in bumper to bumper traffic on Woodward.

Like many of you guys, I took advantage of the beautiful weather and washed my car today. In the middle of cleaning my car, my daughter stopped by and I took a couple of pics of her. Thought you might like some different pics in this thread, instead of motor or car parts.
