Try a little pearl in the dark color.

Quadracer392 10-22-2014 11:13 AM

Ken, I tried looking up the mirror flake in the paint and couldn't I find a thing about it. Only thing I came up with was that some company came up with something called "diamond dust" in the 60's or so but it was outlawed because of the silica in it and you can't buy it anymore. I like both colors a lot so it's really hard to decide but I'm kinda somewhat leaning towards the original color since I've yet to see one locally painted that color. Mestorod, the darker blue actually does already have the pearl in it, it's just hard to tell if your not in the direct sunlight. Since I've decided to paint the car myself, if I don't like how it turns out or I get tired of it, I'll change it down the road. I'm actually going to look at another chevelle tonight which is a 72 that looks to be in about the same shape that the one I have now was when I bought it. Take a closer look at it this evening.

Quadracer392 10-22-2014 08:50 PM

Well I went and looked at that 72 and it was way worse than what it looked like in the pictures on CL. Wasn't hardly anything left of it. Guy said the guy he got it off of let it sit out in the weather for the last 15 years. It only had 94K miles on it. Such a waste.

I made some progress on the rocker panel and quarter tonight. I couldn't believe how much bondo was there plus I found a bunch of wood and what looks like old news paper, lol. I'll finish getting the front half tomorrow evening. Check out this fine repair job that was done years ago.

No surprise there... I've seen newspaper, screen material, "speed tape", etc. Some people should never attempt body work. You're really saving that old car from an untimely demise.

SS Shaun 10-23-2014 07:55 AM

WOW i thought my bondo job i found was a lot! keep up the good work man!

Quadracer392 10-30-2014 08:30 PM

All of the welds I found under the quarter and on the rocker looked like someone used a welding rod with some batteries in series. Look horrible! You're right carpoor some people should never attempt body work!! Shaun I bet this whole quarter and rocker panel had without exaggeration had a gallon of bondo in it

Been a little busy doing other things last few nights but I did get a few things done the other night.

Got the rest of the rocker off and used some rust converter put on everything, then primed it all

http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q...psfeyeun3e.jpg

Got the rocker tacked into place and removed the smashed quarter/door post support that they never fixed and since I couldn't find a repro one. I cut it and few other things off the chevelle that I went and looked at the other night before it met it's finial demise at the crusher.
http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q...psyowtip0i.jpg
http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q...psdiviq8s0.jpg

Also got more of the quarter panel off. I'm going to wait till I get the inner wheelhouse and trunk extension replaced before I take it all the way off.

shadowgray396 10-30-2014 08:48 PM

Wow, I was so lucky that my rocker work was not bad. My car had very little rust when I replaced my rocker. Nice work, my hat is off to you.

:ntwrthy::ntwrthy:

carpoor 10-30-2014 09:40 PM

I agree with Ray, most people would run away from that job.

Ms Grumpy 10-30-2014 09:45 PM

Justin you are a really making progress.

SS Shaun 10-31-2014 09:25 AM

good work man!!

Quadracer392 11-06-2014 08:58 PM

Thanks guys! It's definitely been a learning experience for me.

Got the rest of my parts I needed for the body in this evening and got started on it after dinner. First thing I tackled was the new carb. that came in. I ended up getting the Polymer version of the Street Demon 625 CFM. I must say I'm pretty impressed with how this thing is made and how it looks but even more impressed with how it ran right out of the box. Primed it with fuel hooked the ignition wire back up and it fired right up. I hooked up a vacuum gauge and adjusted the idle screws just a tad and seemed to run really good. True test will be when I'm able to drive it.

http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q...psrqt0hztr.jpg

Here's is what I started with as far as the body this evening
http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q...pspnzrtmoy.jpg

I got the inner and outer wheelhouse along with the trunk extension test fitted. After a little finesse with the trunk extension which at first seemed like it wasn't going to fit very well, I got it where I needed it and the other parts almost fell into place. Now I can take everything back out, treat the rust, fix a couple small rust holes, prime and paint then tack it into place and start fitting the quarter.

SS Shaun 11-06-2014 10:06 PM

Jealous on the carb man

Quadracer392 11-07-2014 05:22 AM

Thanks Ken!

Shaun, I dunno if you saw it the other day, but I posted in the thread you made the other day about the demon carb. I got a heck of a deal on it. $262 shipped to my house and no tax. I couldn't pass it up. As of this morning the price is still the same. Here's what I posted

I've been looking for a new carb and ran across this today. I was on there two day ago and it was regular price. Since It was marked down so much I decided to get it. Well, when I went to check out I forgot amazon charges tax now. Then I remembered jegs does online price matching and since they don't have a store in WV I wouldn't have to pay tax if I bought it online. So, I saved myself an extra $15 in tax on top of $70 it was marked down from by buying it through jegs.:D

For whatever reasons the other models aren't marked down but here is the link to the one that is.

chevymaher 11-07-2014 05:51 AM

I remember doing all that. Looking good.

My brother and I shared a garage in the beginning and for most of my cars work. He has a 68 charger. We had both of them all apart like that at the same time. Mine apart on the lift and his was on a rotisserie getting floorpans.

People would come by to gawk and think you boys have lost your minds this time.

shadowgray396 11-07-2014 08:46 PM

Doing good work there Justin

carpoor 11-07-2014 09:15 PM

That carburetor reminds me of an old thermoquad in appearance.

Quadracer392 11-08-2014 05:06 AM

Maher, I've had several people ask me, how in world I was going to get it back together and couple said i was crazy also.

Thanks Ray!

Carpoor, I've heard some other say the same thing, but I've never really been around or used one. Didn't Chrysler mainly use those? These are supposed to be a "new design." I must say the other night when I was running it. The motor was fully warmed up and the body and top plate were almost the same temp as the ambient air. The composite body is supposed to keep the fuel a lot cooler and I can see where it definitely would.

carpoor 11-08-2014 06:25 AM

Yes, used by Mopar. For a short time they were composite body, and were sought after by racers for exactly what you described.

Quadracer392 01-19-2015 08:26 PM

It's been quite a while since I've had time to work on the car but last week I had an evening to do a couple of things and tonight I had some more time. Last week I had to patch a few pieces on the lip where the inner wheel well welds to the trunk pan. Tonight I was able to get the trunk extension and inner wheel well welded into place. Hopefully tomorrow evening I'll be able to get the outer wheel well done and then get the rest of the quarter panel off and start getting it fitted. I'd like to able to at least drive around in it this spring. I know the wedding deadline didn't work out very well but hopefully I can stick to this one. Lol

Hank70SS 01-20-2015 06:55 AM

Making progress again. I wish I had your skills.

shadowgray396 01-20-2015 11:14 PM

I assume you aligned that up with your quarter panel before you welded that in place. Last quarter I helped with we almost put everything back together and pinned it before we did any welding to make sure it would fit correctly. Going to look good.

Quadracer392 01-21-2015 06:27 AM

Thanks Hank, It's not a very finely polished skill but it's enough to get me by or in trouble whichever comes first lol

Ray, That's exactly what I will do, I will screw the outer wheel well into place until the quarter if fitted to everything. That's what I did on the other side too. I had to work over 5 hours last night and didn't get a chance to work on it. So hopefully tonight, unless I have to work over again, I'll get a chance to work on it some more.

Ken Hayes 01-21-2015 06:49 PM

Justin, what can you tell me about your motor? Mine looks like yours except that my block is black and valve covers are chrome.

Ken, the motor in my car ZZ4 crate motor I got bought off a guy while back. It's just a small block 350 that comes with a roller cam from the factory. I swapped the cam out for one from Straub Technology, it's got factory vortec heads and an edelbrock RPM intake with a street demon carb. When I got the motor it was black but I painted it orange. It was a long block so it didn't come with valve covers so I bought center bolt covers for a 98 chevy truck and used those. Is there anything else you were wanting to know about it? What motor is in your car?

Quadracer392 01-21-2015 08:33 PM

Work on getting the quarter fitted this evening, but ran out of time. The back half lined up pretty good but I need to do some more work up around the door and the rocker.

Won't be long though

You are one talent guy. Looking good.

Ken Hayes 01-21-2015 10:51 PM

Mines a 350/330 crate motor. It has a flat tappet cam 212/222....435 intake / 460 exhaust, vortec 64cc heads, aluminum intake with 600 Edelbrock, 4 bolt mains. Cam is like a 65-67 Corvette with more lift and duration. I have no idea what year the motor is and it does have center bolt valve covers like yours. Sure would like to find out what year it is.

Post the casting number. I will find out.
Or look online. There is a list that shows what years different casting numbers were used in.

Ken Hayes 01-22-2015 11:36 AM

There is no number on the front deck below passenger side head. The car is in storage so I cant look at it now.

Quadracer392 01-22-2015 12:23 PM

If I'm not mistaking crate motors don't come with the stamping on that pad, but there should be a casting number on the back of the block where the bell housing bolts on the drivers side below the head. Should be something like whats in this picture.

When you get the numbers post em up and we'll look it up and see what you have.

Quadracer392 01-24-2015 10:03 PM

I've been in the garage since 8 this morning and I got the quarter panel and outer wheel well pretty much finished up today. Just have a couple of spot welds to finish up. The back half all but fell into place unlike where the door, rocker, and quarter meet up. That's where it had be wrecked before and half-a$$ fixed. but I think I've managed to get everything massaged into place. Its kinda starting to look like a car again.

Has anyone had any personal experience American Auto Wire kit? I've read some good things about them and the kit seems really complete. I'm thinking I need to order that and my master cylinder brake booster pretty soon.

flash 01-25-2015 08:09 AM

You have been busy ,it looks great , I think American Auto Wire is what I used in my truck .

mestorod70 01-25-2015 09:14 AM

Car looks great...hope mine looks that good soon.
BTW what did you use on the inner quarter..and in the trunk.

shadowgray396 01-25-2015 09:35 AM

Looking great

Quadracer392 01-25-2015 09:36 AM

Thanks Flash!

Appreciate it Ray!

Mestorod, Thanks, I'm sure in no time yours will be finished. While working on it, it seems like it's never going to end but when it does it's very satisfying knowing you did it.

Are you asking what I used for paint to seal the panel? If so, I just used a two part epoxy primer and a semi-gloss enamel on some stuff.

shadowgray396 01-25-2015 06:47 PM

I remember building mine, it never seemed like I would every finish it. Over 5 years of working on it, looking for parts and trying to come up with the money I needed to complete it. Stay the path and you will make it, and end the end you will be glad you did.

Thats what i was thinking too.
epoxy prime on the inside of the quarter and weld thru primer where needed.
Btw did yours have a round yellow blob of somthing used as a spacer in the upper part of the quarter...what did you use to replace it.
thanks..mick.
