Sounds like its time to go to work Bill.

chevymaher 09-17-2014 08:09 PM

Painted the bumper brackets. I getting a list together of the most important stuff to buy. Get the parts which need the most labor and get that dash complete inside and out first.
Seals and rubber.Bumpers and rear trim are a must. So it looks finished as I pull in the garage.
Talked to the elky guy today. Saturday is the day it still on.

carpoor 09-18-2014 03:32 PM

Went and picked up an engine for the 69' this morning.

SS Shaun 09-18-2014 07:37 PM

installed my heater hoses for the chevelle. getting chilly over here need some heat

flash 09-18-2014 07:53 PM

Moved the Chevelle out of the shop so that I could get my truck out ,truck needs a little exercise .

Ms Grumpy 09-18-2014 10:24 PM

Hope you had a nice workout with the truck flash. I wish I had the time to take my car out today. We have been working to have a garage sale and about the only thing I will be able to is look at my car in the garage this weekend.

chevymaher 09-20-2014 09:21 AM

Waiting on my Co-piolet to get back from the store. Going after the Elky parts car.
Killin me he knows I ready and goes to the store. What is that?

carpoor 09-20-2014 10:49 AM

Not a damn thing. The weather is awful, no sunshine plus raining off and on. I need a garage... Stat!

BillsCamino 09-20-2014 12:58 PM

Been tinkering with the Sprint all morning...waiting on a guy to drive up from Tampa and pick up an engine...hopefully this afternoon.

Replaced the ugly original steering wheel with a like new one donated by a Chevelle buddy!! :)
Cleaned up some of the underdash wiring and replaced a few instrument panel bulbs. Don't really like the looks of that printed circuit. :(
Installed the re-conditioned factory AM/FM radio and removed the dash pad to examine the dash speakers.
They're toast...gonna get replaced too.

New carpet goes in this afternoon...

chevymaher 09-21-2014 07:21 AM

Well out to gut the Elky so it can go By-By as quickly as possible.

shadowgray396 09-21-2014 03:51 PM

What are you doing that you're going to have to tear your car back apart this winter?

What all parts are you salvaging out of it? Does it have the SS or Malibu dash?

Dash is coming out, temp gauge and tach stop working. Im sure it's not a ground issue, and the tach worked funny when I got the car running and now it doesn't work at all. I also noticed yesterday the heater control plate cracked across the middle of it. The motor is leaking oil badly now. Not sure if I will have to pull it for a rear main yet or if it is a valve cover or the intake. I find no oil up high on the motor. Im hoping while the dash is out I can find an original dash bezel and replace the repro one. while it's out I will also get the radio working and finish installing under the dash lighting. Car only has 380 miles on it since I started driving it 3 years ago. I would drive it more if I wasn't leaking the oil under it.

Dash work
Motor oil leak
Might also put in a new wiring harness and fuse box while I have it apart again.

No it is a El Camino. I getting all the air conditioning vents, evaporator and condenser, all the underhood valving for the air. I needed a decent steering wheel to restore. Since 68 wheels were garbage basically for cracking, and there are no aftermarket wheels the horn button works with.I snatching the power steering for a back up. I needed the front sway bar. I needed one headliner rod, they dont make them either. Basically I needed a bunch of oddball 68 stuff they don't reproduce. So this bent in half car was perfect for my needs. I was just about to buy a running car to get this stuff off of. Better a total than trash a good car for the parts I needed tho.
I buying all new dash parts that they make that show for the SS stuff. Emblems and dash placard bezel etc etc. It was a 327 2 speed originally. I suspect the engine and trans were in the old chevy truck the guy had there. 327 in a 60 custom truck HUMMM wonder where that came from?

shadowgray396 09-21-2014 09:58 PM

Looks like it has some usable parts on it. Doors, front clip, trim parts, etc

Ms Grumpy 09-22-2014 06:54 AM

Ray looks like you have your winter project. It is just sad that you have under 400 miles on it in the past 3 years. Hopefully you will get all the problems corrected this winter and enjoy your car more next year.

Ms Grumpy 09-22-2014 07:02 AM

This weekend I didn't have time to take my car out, except to park it at the end of the driveway because we had a garage sale. Earlier in the week I spend a lot of time cleaning the car up because the weather was perfect, a little over cast, mid 60's and just beautiful weather to clean it.

So while the garage sale was in full swing my neighbor decided that it is time to cut his grass. I couldn't get over to cover it until it was covered with grass that his lawnmower was blowing right at it. It really ticked me off because this guy has seen me spending hours on the car in the past and he knows that I put it away or cover it when he has cut his grass before. I think that the reason that I am so aggrivated is because on Friday he had someone come to his house to fix his outdoor fence and his outdoor electrical outlet was not working, and being a good neighbor, I let the repairman use the outlet in my garage. So much for getting a thank you from my neighbor when I told him about it. Same neighbor that my kids shoveled his sidewalk last year in the snow and he didn't even say thank you to them. I think I am done being neighborly to this family who moved in last year with 3 small children.

Been gone since May around here. Missed all the car shows I really wanted to go too. Finally home for a while I think, and the rains are just around the corner and all the car shows are done. Going to run it over to a friends shop and see if we can finally find this pesky oil leak this week.

chevymaher 09-22-2014 08:43 AM

It sounds like more a volume than pressure problem, I would unhook the fuel line put a rubber hose on it so you can get the gas from under the hood. Fill the fuel bowls manually and start it give it a rev. That thing should shoot like a fire hose.If it dont you found your problem.
A coke bottle hanging from the open hood just gravity feed is enough pressure to run the car full throttle. Less than a lb of pressure. But the volume of gas flowing in is enough. Carbs dont care about pressure like injection does. Just that enough gas is getting there.

Exactly, more pressure does not mean more volume.

chevymaher 09-22-2014 12:06 PM

We making ground here I got motor plates and I getting the power steering unit just to have extra.
The old Furd is loaded and my buddy taking the first load to the scrapyard. But i already got everything I absolutely needed.

Getting down there.

BillsCamino 09-24-2014 07:18 AM

Picked up the Sprint's buckets from the upholstery shop yesterday afternoon...very impressed with the Legendary covers!!
I'll finish installing the new carpet today and bolt them in. Hopefully the dash speakers will arrive soon and I'll be just about finished with this car.
I'm hoping to drive it down to Ocala, FL next weekend for the All GM show sponsored by NPD.
Heading up to Charlotte Friday morning for the NC Chevelle club's show held a Rick Hendrick's Motorsport complex.
Awesome venue for a show!!!

Bill it sounds like you are almost ready. It is so hard waiting for those last parts to be installed. You see the light at the end of the tunnel and you just want to get there. Have fun at the shows and post some pics.

SS Shaun 09-24-2014 02:23 PM

darn it!! thanks man

shadowgray396 09-24-2014 09:38 PM

The rear window stainless was at least $100 for original parts, and the front window stainless if it was still there was another $100. The front cowls if were still in decent shape are another $50 apiece.

chevymaher 09-25-2014 03:54 PM

Made a decent sized order today. I got everything for the dash. Bezel gaskets knobs insulation, air ball kit, dash pad, emblem above the glove box. Tail end trim a bunch of front end chrome. Weather stripping for the entire car. Door handles, vinyal top, emblems for front and back. New bumpers.
That ought to keep me busy all winter. Wiring, air, then dash. Buffing it then weather stripping it and putting the windows back in. Restore my new steering wheel. This gonna take a while.

chevymaher 09-26-2014 08:53 AM

Stripping the 5 dashes I got of the switches. It is sad almost throwing away things I been collecting and hoarding for this day.

chevymaher 09-26-2014 03:48 PM

Just FYI. El caminos and chevelles use the same window regulators. I taking everything i got apart and using the best parts I got of the multiples of each I got. And that was the nugget of new info for the day for me.

SS Shaun 09-27-2014 11:49 AM

re did my fuel line from the tank to the fuel pump installed a borrowed fuel pump and it drove good. put my pump back on drove like crap guess i am ordering a new pump..lol
