Yeah, it had blob of what appeared to be a sort of expanding foam, a soft glue or something. I actually didn't replace it with anything. I haven't done a ton of looking but I haven't read anything about having to replace it with something else.

I've been piddling around with the car last few days cleaning up some more spot welds and doing a few things here and there. Tonight I got the fuel tank installed and also managed to get the front sway bar installed. I had to twist the bushings with a pair of channel locks to get them lined up. I looking at some radiators and realized the one I have on the car is the small one. I did some digging around and found a brand new radiator I have for a spare for my old truck and come to find out it's the same one used for the big blocks in the cars so I bought everything to convert the radiator over to the bigger one and I'm going to the junk yard tomorrow after work and buying a set of electric fans out of Ford Windstar for 50 bucks! I'm also stop and get some more gas for the welder so I can finish fixing a few small holes around the back glass along the roof then I can start cutting stuff in with paint and doing the very much dreaded block sanding. Here are a few pics from tonight.
Here's how small the radiator is, look at the gap in the opening for the core support. That's where it's supposed to mount to. It seams to me that an awful lot of air would go by the radiator instead of through it. I guess that's why the fan is there to pull it thought though http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q...psgzbtuesq.jpg http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q...pssgjhdzgw.jpg Here's the swaybar http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q...psvnxnxs0s.jpg http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q...psergqh3pj.jpg And the fuel tank. http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q...psrxk0enas.jpg |
Its looking good ,lots of work you have got done . I have done nothing but cut and split firewood ,nothing on the toys .
|
Thanks flash! I know what ya mean about the wood. It's our main heat source (I have central heat but refuse to pay the price of propane) and I have enough to get through February but if march is real cold I'll probably have to cut and split some more, which is what I should do now, but..... All work and no play is no fun!! :D
|
I probably have enough to last through half of next winter but dont want to chance it .I have a propane furnace too but try not to let it kick in .
|
That looks like a 6 cylinder radiator. The top plate does also. The V8 top plate is held down by 4 bolts and not 3. The six cylinder core support has a filler plate on each side of the radiator to keep the air from passing by. I have a chrome top plate if you need one.
|
I would say that smaller radiator was factory. They must have used them in the smaller V-8 non-A/C cars too. Here's the sticker that was on mine before I sandblasted it off. It say something about the 250hp V-8 idle speed.
http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q...psaminvdii.jpg Dang I just bought a chrome one from JEGS last night. It was pretty cheap, plus I need a few other things. Thanks for the offer though! |
My 69' is a factory L48 300 HP, 4 speed car. It had the three bolt top plate and a small radiator from the factory.
I am swapping to the HD cooling - bigger radiator, 4 bolt top plate, and 772 clutch fan. |
Forgot about the smaller V8's.

Well I was able to work on the car almost all weekend long. Got quite a bit done too. First thing I was able to do was rebuild the whole steering column, pulled everything apart cleaned, greased and painted it. Haven't decided which steering wheel to go with yet though. Next thing I took care of was the swapping the smaller radiator with the larger and making brackets to mount the electric fans from that Ford Windstar that I got from the junkyard. I hooked both of them up to make sure they worked and I tell ya what those things move a TON of air! Still waiting on a couple things to get here I had to order to finish it up. Also moved some parts from storage to the garage and vica versa. I cleaned the floors, packing tray, and insides of the quarters so I can finish primering the rest of the interior and took all of the trim down that holds the headliner in place. The rest of the afternoon I sanded the roof down to get all the rust off of it. Here are a few pictures.
New radiator covers the entire opening now http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q...psboouasv0.jpg Brackets I fabed up to hold the fans in place The fans fit the radiator perfectly! http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q...psrmpztnho.jpg http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q...psmf83u8ez.jpg I didn't get a shot of the column or the roof but here's the inside http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q...psc6hdekfg.jpg |
Nice fan set up. I doing that to. Maybe not a winstar but the electric fans.
|
I've finally had some time to get back on the car even though I've had a massive head cold, I was able to finish getting all the rust holes fixed around the back glass. It took a bit of time to make the patches but It's finally done. The only thing left to do that I forgot about is the lower fender mounts. They rotted off and ended up coming off with the old fenders. So, if anyone has a picture of what they are supposed to look like it may be helpful since I'll have to make my own. Here are a couple of pictures of the repair job around the window. It's not real pretty but it's all going to be covered up by the trim anyway.
The Before http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q...pssctw2cnz.jpg During http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q...pskwuuqri0.jpg http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q...psumqurb2j.jpg The After http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q...psdcxytohj.jpg http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q...pst2bnacjl.jpg |
That turned out good.
|
I agree ,very nice repair work.
|
Looks good. Rust repair is always fun. Here's a good thread on what you might need.

Thanks Guys!!
Ray thanks for the link to the pictures. Those should be good enough to do what I need to do. |
Good job. I went through that on mine to. There strips from a hood there on mine.

Been working on the car last couple of nights. Yesterday I finally got the center link for the steering and scuffed it and the rest of the tie rods all up and painted it so it wouldn't rust and put a anti-seize on the threads for the adjusters. Let that dry overnight and put them this evening. I also finished putting the lock plate in the steering column and installing the steering shaft between the column and gear box last night.
Only MOOG steering components for my this thing. http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q...psgaq2bzei.jpg http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q...pscmkvfmpj.jpg Steering shaft looks real nice in there, don't it Ray ;-) http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q...psyi8atjg7.jpg And tonight I got an awesome package! The wiring harness came. I must say, so far this kit is really awesome! Everything is labeled with diagrams, even the each wire has a printed label on it the entire length for what it's for. I got the Fuse panel in tonight and started routing some of the under dash wiring. For now I'm just going to do the dash and wire up the motor and leave the rest off until I get it painted and a few other things done. http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q...pslqymog4s.jpg http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q...pslpncdllb.jpg http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q...psb5i9vblb.jpg |
Nice work. Looking good. Always fun to see them come together. The steering shaft looks very nice.
|
Well I've still been working the car but not much visual progress. I got the the dash wired up and got all the heater controls hooked and I ordered the brake booster and master cylinder last week and got it put in over the weekend. Piece by piece it's coming together.

Its looking good ,like a car again .
|
Looks good. I like the insulation on the floor. I gonna look into some of that.
|
Looking like a Chevelle again. Nice work
|
Very nice job...its geting there.
Good choice on the floor insulation. As well as sound reducer it also stops water geting to the metal |
Thanks!! I got the insulation from amazon which is the best price I found on it anywhere. It's called Fat Mat and it comes in a 50 and 80 MIL thickness. I think I'm going to cover the entire floor and trunk and also above the headliner. We are supposed to get about 6-10 inches of heavy wet snow tonight, so if I can't get out of my driveway in the morning which is a very step grade with a 180° turn at the bottom I'll work it some more tom. if we have power. I guess something else I ought to do is to get some sort of whiteboard or something so I can make a list of everything that needs done and start marking things off. :)
|
In my truck I used something similar but much cheaper ,it came from Lowes on a roll. Its made for a roofing product ,cant remember the name but worked good.
|
Got mine from Eastwood. Had the same rating as dynamite extreme, but was a lot less money. I have heard got things about Fat Mat also
http://i777.photobucket.com/albums/y...ior/Car004.jpg |
Flash does it have the foil backing also?
Ray, that stuff looks pretty good too. I ought to price it compared to the fatmat and see which is cheaper. We ended up getting the snow last night and for once got as much or more than predicted. Last time I measured it it was 11" and it has snowed for 4 hours since then so there has to be well over a foot. Power has been off since about 3:30am and not expected to come back on until 11pm Saturday so, we have a small generator running the essential and according to the wife the garage isn't on the list, so I can't work on the car. :-/ I was supposed to get to get two packages today but that's not going to happen either. Here a pic of the snow drooping the powerline down enough to where hot side was touching the neutral side. http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q...ps6hnlrzxv.jpghttp://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q...psbdrpwk2x.jpg |
It's been a little while since I've updated anything but I really haven't had much time to work on the car either. Only thing I've really done to it was get the engine wired up to the new harness, so now I can start the car with the ignition. Also, I've been working on the drivers door fitment issue I've been having. After messing with it for a couple of hours last night and figuring out the two drivers doors I have are misshaped and have rust holes that would need to be patched anyway I decided to order a new one. Hopefully Monday when it gets here I'll be able to get it on and fitted.
http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q...pssdf49prt.jpg |
Well the door I ordered showed up this evening and the box looked to be in pretty decent shape so I was hoping for the best.... no such luck. I pulled it out figuring there would a dent or two in the door and I was expecting that but after getting it all the way out both bottom corners were were messed up and the front corner being the worse, it was messed up almost a third of the way up the door. So, I called summit and had them refund my money and going to send it back and something locally. I wish AMD made the doors but the only thing they make that I can find are the door skins.
http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q...psoqny73im.jpg I could have fixed this one but the front one was to much to fix for being a brand new door. http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q...psy5ecxczj.jpg |
That sucks. It's amazing how things get handled.
|
I put an aftermarket door on my father's green 72'. We could never get it to open and close like the factory door on the passenger side. I believe some of that was due to the thinner gauge metal. I would use a factory door at all costs.

Last night I got the front brakes bled and ordered sound deadner for the the rest of the car. Also ordered the rear bumper so I can make sure I don't need to move or trim anything before I start on the bodywork. Still moving forward just not much visually. |
Justin bummer about the door. We have sent Audio equipment and spent hours packing it and it still gets there destroyed. So glad that you were able to find a door local.
|
Justin, what kind of sound deadener did you order? I used "Fat Mat" in my trunk, 25 sqft for $54.00. (that's 5 sheets 18"x40") Its as good as Dynamat at 1/4 the cost and very easy to work with.
|
Ken, I told you wrong the other day, I only got 25 sq ft for the price I told you not 50 sq ft. I compared the 50 mil stuff I had and the 80 mil I just got and it's a pretty big difference.
Today was a pretty awesome day!! I got some loose ends tied up with transmission and few other things and wanted to put that sound deadener in but the floors had bunch of dust and crap from where I had been cutting and grinding on things. I tried to use the shop vac to get it all out so the stuff would stick but couldn't so since I got the couple of things taken care of with the transmission and the brakes bled the other day I was actually able to DRIVE the car up to the house to use the water hose for what I needed. Even though there wasn't a seat in it. It felt AWESOME to get in it and fire up and back it out of the garage on it's own power!! My wife got the video of me backing it out of the garage and driving it up the hill to the house. Makes me want to get this thing on the road so bad! I'm trying to get the video uploaded so you guys can see it. But for now here are a couple of pictures of it in the yard until I get the video done. http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q...ps2ruda2bq.jpg http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q...psdd61xhqw.jpg http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q...ps9ysxrbsi.jpg http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q...pstpaxkmh2.jpg |
I have a video of my first back out of the driveway in my photobucket link. Like a kid in the candy store. Congrats, looking good.
|
Congrats ,looking very good ,love the wheels too.
|
Thanks Ray! I felt like a kid that got that new toy they were wanting for Christmas.
Thanks flash! Here's the video. Sorry it's so shaky. My wife was trying to record it with her phone and walk in flip flops up the hill. https://youtu.be/zU7HYCpk4ns |
