Well today is the day. Warm so I can leave the door open a while air the joint out. Spent the day masking and cleaning the bottom getting it ready. I decided not to do the front wheelwells. There is no clear way to make a line under there. And it looks so good. So from the engine bay to the rear gets it. I am doing it because this is what it was factory. Ay least what it was when I got it. And the floorboard was the one thing that didnt rot sitting in a feild 25 years so it must do something. I dont see a rust issue in the front anyway. From getting caught out in the rain anyway. I will try to avoid driving in the rain.

Done deal cleaning the floors. Turned out real nice

I been working on cars since i was a pup. I don't think i will ever get used to laying under a car on carpet and working and not even getting dirty. I remember gravel lots and pain cold dropping the bolt in the gravel LOL.
Memory lane aside. I am taking a break at the moment. I got the fuel lines hooked up and now am putting in the evap system. I got the big block sender with a return line. for future upgrades as needed if needed, it is there if I need it. Aftermarket tank has extra junk going on the factory tank didnt. Because it fits everything. I am on the final vent tube for the tank and it is so tight I needed to get a wrench for the clamp. extension and swivel isnt going to work. So I am letting the blood rush back to my arms and have a soda. Report in. After this under there with the chassis black and touch up a couple things. Axle where the jackstands were. New bolts so they are not as temped to rust over time. And a nice scratch in the frame where the tank was so tight going in. Major bench press screech deal. I got a Holley High volume mechanical pump rated at 500 plus HP new. But like i said I planned ahead and got parts for way bigger if it tries to run out of gas when we get that far. I wont be racing just getting sideways alot so it should do just fine. Then I going to use window ribbon and stuff it in the front wheel well to fender cracks, not a factory deal but it wont show and I am good with better sealing and less rust on the all new parts. I try to make it factory appearing. But if you can't tell I do upgrade it to modern standards. Things that show make it look original. Under the hood all bets are off. Pop the hood and oh that isnt even close. Serpentine belt system. Elderbrock valve cover dress up crap. The ones with the removable tops for valve adjustments and additional clearance for roller rockers. All my favorite junk from when I was a kid I saved all these years. Thinking I would never have another one. Okay had my break back to work. |
Took the Chevelle out today. Rear main seal is leaking. Just got my replacement tach. They are now making one with the 3 screws on the face like the originals. Ordering new dash speakers next before I pull the dash. May be pulling the motor after that.

Finished with work early, dropped by and ended up stripping the driver's side quarter panel.
To say that I am upset is an understatement. When my father owned the car, he was very ill from a heart surgery gone wrong. He paid someone to do the bulk of the bodywork. The guy is a hack, and basically got paid to waste time and materials. And in the process, F up my car. Here are a few pictures. In some spots, the filler was at least 1/4" thick... slopped on top of a new panel! Also, it looks like he hit the panel with the tip of a body hammer a few inches below where it was welded on. It's a warped mess, and I am unsure if it can be saved. I am contemplating weather or not I will have to cut it off and start over. |
Ran across this in my stuff. Original chevrolet billboard for my year car. Non blacked out grill. Stripes. And a 427 emblem. So there was one of them somewhere.

I took a picture of the quarter panel that we recently installed on my folks 72' Malibu. You can clearly see how the body line should look.
|
|
Guess the chevelle was jealous of the boat. was charging the battery and the hood hinge gave on a joint. So I got it off gonna weld er back up. Didnt scratch the paint at least.
|
Well it is fixed and back together. Got off easy that time only one small chip
|
I think the 72 Malivert was getting jealous of all the attention my 72 California 4x4 was getting and demanded some attention .A week ago Sunday I was going to drive it to my Mom's about 80 miles north and just after filling with gas a guy said youre leaking something up front .Open the hood and the lower radiator hose was leaking .Took her back home and parked it in the home garage .Got the hoses and then when I decided to take it to my shop to change the hoses it would not start ,battery cable had fell apart .Get the cable repaired and got the hoses replaced .Now I need to replace the 10 year old tires soon. Now back to the 4x4 .
|
I picked up a new quarter panel for the 72'. I need to strip the roof, both doors, and about 70% of the passenger side fender. Things are about to get messy.

Not today but couple weeks ago, bought UMI rear upper and lower trailing arms and installed with my stock sway bar. Today adjusted my slapper bars they were hanging down to low.
Took it for a drive and gas, had a state trooper stop me to tell me I couldn't use YOM ohio plates. Car is registered with historical and the dated plates. Showed him the registration and he informed me he didn't care what it said I was illegal running those plates. Said he ran them when I was at the gas station and they came back as a 89 Mercedes. I asked why did he run my plates while it was parked? There was no violation. He couldn't answer that just told me he wasn't giving me a ticket this time but get the plates off the car. I'll take my chances, cause I know he's wrong. |
Well I been screwing with that silly boat since I got it. Wife is starting the last semester of college. So once she graduates and gets a job. I will get paroled from Hobbyshop Prison. 400 dollar books and tuition is killin the poor ol chev right now.
Anywho today I got a family get together for a birthday this evening. So I taking the day off from my usual work I do. Wash the van then spend the rest of the day with the chevelle. Put the charger on it. Give her a good wash and detailing. Wax her with the new Fancy Smancy UV protectant boat wax. Then just sit in her a long time and detail the dash. Listen to the stereo and make Vroom Vroom EEERRRR noises like a kid. If i get all silly fix the chips in the paint under the hood. Been a while since we spent a little quality time together. |
Not my chevelle but a chevelle. 66 convertible in primer just the body and frame. On a truck going to someones house. Bodywork looked good. No doors trunk or doghouse. But what was there was done right.
It is definitely on the way to being fixed. |
Tuning my new SPC suspension in.. I'm going to take some of the caster out today.. I have it set around 8 degrees positive..
I've been my car driving a lot.. It's a real joy to drive a old car that handles like a new car.. |

Ate more dust today...
Spent several hours stripping more paint/primer/filler. Back to my day job tomorrow. Possibly do some more next week. |
I ate dust today to. But i am grinding glass.
I was there keep a pluggin along. |
I am doing my best to try to plate my car in Texas but between Grundy and the Texas DMV , I am going crazy. I thought that I would be able to transfer my car insurance, but no, I have to totally reapply with Grundy. This is such a bummer.
|
Been too busy with trucks today ,besides Chevelle is not here .

Ate some more dust today, too hot. I'm done for today, four hours is enough. Borrowed a friend's stud gun/dent puller and fixed two small dents. In the process of removing more primer and filler - I found several more areas that need attention. :(
|
I hear ya 4 hours is enough. I doing basically the same thing on the boat inside now. After 4 hours I am ready to clean everything up and call it till the next time.
Looking good your getting with it tho. |
Cleaned the intake manifold and replaced the valve cover.

I had good intentions today, but was hampered by equipment failure after only a few hours. My pad that the stripping discs stick to came apart. Oh well... there's always Friday. (My next day off)
I found more filler where it wasn't needed around the rear window. The guy obviously didn't understand that certain areas of these cars are round and concaved from the factory. |
Car has just been sitting in the garage these days. Not been able to get it out much. Might be time to think about selling it, and let someone else enjoy it.

She's pretty much naked now, every place the grinder will fit is down to bare metal. Already started to fill and block the deck lid and passenger side quarter panel.
|
Looking good keep your nose to the grindstone.
|
I looked at the Malivert through the bodyshop fence for a brief minute .
|
I almost have the new motor ready to fire. Decided to order a new fan and few miscellaneous brackets because the old ones were in rough shape. Going on vacation shortly so it'll be August before it runs
|
Well we will be here waiting. You Tube it so we can hear it.
|
I have been restoring that boat I mentioned. Putting new wood and interior in it. I do something my son ask in a impatient way, But dad did you work on the chevelle today?
LOL I wish these old cars were as cheap as boats. I can redo the entire boat and interior for less than half the cost of the interior i need to buy. But it is keeping me busy. I hate not having a major project going on. Clock is ticking this is the last semester for my wife. Just spent enough on books to do the silly interior on the car. Being a adult with responsibilities isn't all it is cracked up to be. |
Yesterday I drove the Chevelle home from the Northern Ohio Chevelle Show ,man my tail was sore .
|
I just cleaned the seats and placed an order at 4wheelonline for a set of BFG Gforce sport comp tires.
|
Changed the oil and filter, that's about it.
|
Cleaned my car up and fix a couple of small items on it. Most likely getting it ready to sell. I figure if I sell it I can pay off my house and find some other toy to play with. Only manage to drive it twice this summer and only put 600 miles on it since 2012 when I finished it.
|
I understand Ray , I have sold several toys and plan to sell a couple more ,with only one income now I cant afford to keep them all insured .
|
I get it too Ray and John. I figured that I would never sell the cars that I have now, but just don't have the interest now that I used to have. Would sell in a heartbeat right now.
|
I never lost interest. I am sure I will own mine barring a accident for the rest of my life. Wife is in her last semester of college now. It is almost my time for it to be finished.
I wont drive it in rain on purpose but i am sure i will get caught out in it a few times. But my plans are to use it as a driver like my truck and van. Tank a week is its ration. Drink it fast there big boy LOL. Now it isn't everyone. People on this site are the exception to the rule. But it saddens me the type of people owning these cars and their attitudes towards the hobby. As I said before I tend to just enjoy it to myself locally where people are not like that and really couldn't give a crap about originality. There was a post in the non chevelle tech section. Guy ask if anyone made a new stereo fit with extension cables. So I posted what I did. Even then the holier than tho crowd reared their ugly head. I got a all numbers matching bla bla bla and it isn't right to do this. What part of nobody cares and this is non chevelle tech didn't you get. I actually avoid numbers cars at shows because I don't want to hear the I am god attitude of the owners. These types don't get it isn't about money or anything like that. It is a hobby and supposed to be fun. Personal choice in building a hot rod. They kinda do the same thing in the boat forum. Telling new guys if it isn't a certain boat it wont be worth what you got in it when you restore it. Daa it is a boat I don't need it at all. It don't matter if it is a new boat it is a waste of money. Same thing applies to chevelles. But like the chev I like it and want it. I am not fickle and know what I want. Anything i buy and put the time into to fix. I will get my moneys worth out of it just by the fact I will wear it completely out . It will be in the same shape I originally got it in when I am 90. Here in my part of the world there are alot of guys like me. Cars that sit under a tarp. Never use them. But they will never get rid of them. So value is irrelevant. Once you get old and die you can't take the money with you. it is about enjoying the time you have here. Everyone has dreams. And fulfilling them is more important than money is. LOL I found out getting this boat. That was one of my wifes dreams to have one. She is a Philippino and a island girl. So boat is a chevelle to her in her world she came from. She supports my want for the chevelle but is kinda blase' about it. Show me when it is done and I can ride in it. Now the boat she is asking are you going to work on it today when you got time. She wants that puppy back on the water. |
