Is this considered a frame-off restoration?

Decided I couldn't put it off any longer so started the remodel of the shower. Just a small stall shower in the master bath. Previous owners had it sprayed at one point but that was starting to peel off, especially the base. Lynda said just put in a liner it will be cheaper and easier than new tile. True but all the hard work is removing the old tile. Once that's done I might as well do it right and put in real tile.

Like I said, removing the old stuff is the hard part. Sheet rock, metal lath, mortar and tile. Altogether close to 1.5" thick. A 3 lb sledge just bounces off the first few blows then eventually it starts to crack. I've done 2 walls and part of the 3rd. Already hauled a few hundred pounds of busted tile and mortar out. Can't wait until I have to start busting out the base. That should really be fun.

I need to do that in my bathroom except mine is only sheetrock and some kind of tile board so demo on mine will be easy .
Will you post pics as you start the rebuild phase of your frame off so I can see how to do mine ?

Looks like you just bought yourself a whole bunch of work Hank. Good luck.

2010 we took out the tub and put in a shower instead. Removed soffit above where tub was, installed fan/light, all new sheet rock, made a in-wall between studs 48" tall cabinet with glass shelves for the wife, new toilet, vanity, sink and tile floor.

Very nice job. That is on the long list here of things to do. Get rid of the tub and put a nice shower like that in.

Ken, your water closet (toilet) is set close to the vanity like mine in Fla. Where is your paper holder? One of those free-standing ones? Good job. Looks professional.

A lot harder removing that old tile than I thought. Got a pry bar behind the tile and tried to pop it off. The stud bowed and knocked a tile loose at the floor on the other side. Just glad it didn't crack the plaster. Our walls are sheetrock with a skim coat of wet plaster.

Ken your bathroom looks great. I found a 'niche' that goes between the studs in the shower. You can apply tile directly to it. They also make a base that you can be tiled so you don't have to form a base with mortar. Not sure what I'll do with the floor. Once I remove the vanity I'll see how easy it is to pull up the old tile floor. Hopefully mine will turn out at least half as good as yours.

I will post pictures, hope I remember to take some. Read and watched some videos. Time consuming but not that hard once all the old stuff is removed.

I have to do the same thing. Wish I could make the shower larger, but that would require gutting both bath rooms and starting over on both or moving a wall in the master bedroom. Good luck on the project.

I'd like to make ours larger too. I could move a wall inside the bathroom but it's the one with plumbing in it and electrical. Redoing the plumbing is out of the question, our bedroom and bathroom are over the family room. I spent too much time redoing the ceiling there to mess with the plumbing above it.
