Process of storing car for winter
I thought I would start this thread to see what we are all doing to store our cars for the winter and we all may learn something new to help us.
I plan on the following; 1. Fogging the motor with fogging agent. 2. Sta-Bil in the gas tank. 3. Disconnect the battery 4. Moisture control in the interior (I think its called Dissident <sp>) 5. Tires off the ground 6. Car cover with all the old blankets that I have. I've been doing this for 10 years now and never had a issue in the spring. I can't wait till spring next year all ready. |
What is fogging a motor?

It a oil based product that you spray into the carb as it is running and it lubes all the internals for the long winter. It's a product that I buy at the marine store and is used for boats. I do my lawn mower as well. It's a lot like taking out the spark plugs and squirting oil on the piston then rotating to lube the bores....but much easier. http://www.syntheticoilnlubes.com/en...gging_oil.html The car does smoke a little at first as it works its way out of the system when you start it up in spring. |
I shut off the engine and take the key out. Put the cover on and maybe hook up a battery tender. I've been doing this for 6 years and never had a problem in the spring.

When I was single....a long time ago a buddy and I were living in a rented house and we put our Harley's in the living room and it was the focal point of the room. The landlord blew a gasket when he had to come in to repair stove. |
Here's my list
1. turn off car 2. disconnect battery 3. jack up and remove wheels (place race rubber in heated storage) 4. remove front clip 5. remove engine and transmission 6. remove interior 7. remove gas tank 8. lose pieces 9. spend money 10. sit on couch being lazy all winter 11. rush to put the car back together in spring 12. tell self "it's still not fast enough" while planning next year's upgrades |

My normal list would be,
1. Park Chevelle in my heated garage. 2. Unhook batt. 3. Put cover on car. 4. Wait till spring. Last years list included the 1st 4, but in the spring.... 5. Pull front clip. 6.Pull engine 7. Rebuild front end 8. paint everything under the hood. 9.(Middle of the summer now) rebuild top half of engine 10. (Labor Day) take the day off from working on Chevelle. 11. Put Chevelle back together 12 Go to first cruisin (last one for the season) 13. Back to number 1. and restart the process. :D |
Dang .... am I the only one that sets a mousetrap on the center console .... just in case???

I just back mine in the shop until the next time I want to go for a drive .I do have a few things that have to be repaired this winter .Touch up some rock chips and have the windshield replaced are the main projects .I will start my projects in January after the Christmas parade in Tenn with the top down .

1-Tarp the garage floor
2- Put car on jack stands 3- Check and top off all fluids 4- Add half mixture of marine stabil and marvil mystery oil in the tank. (A friend of mine did lab tests and found using marine stabil and marvil mystery oil in every tank full helps older car motors run better and not wear down due to all the nitrogen and other cleaners in new gas these days) 5-Disconnect battery 6- Apply a coat of wax or chrome polish on all exterior trim parts 7- Place dryer sheets in the interior, trunk and engine bay. 8- Cover car with soft car cover then place an all weather cover on top 9- Close up garage I might start it once a month only if the weather is really nice and somewhat warm |

My winter plan: Drive car as much as possible except when it rains hard. :D |
I held out as long as I could...But the car is now up on Jack stands.
All I want for Christmas is..... SPRING !!! |
I would still like to get a few old blankets between the cover.
|
Joan and I went for an hour cruise in the 72 vert tonight ,top up of course .Ive been driving the El Camino for the last 2 weeks because my truck is sick. I dont use covers at all as they would be a pain to put on and take off .

I thought it was time to bring this post back to the top to see if anyone else has any good ideas for us that have to store our cars in winter as it is getting to be that time again.

Car cover on mine, Sta Bil in the gas tank, battery disconnected and hooked to a battery tender, I don't put mine up on anything. Car is stored in a heated garage. I'm looking at buying a set of Go Jack car dollies or something very close to them that don't cost so much.

I was just reading some of the NOCC monthly newsletter and one of the suggestions is dryer sheets inside the cabin, trunk and trunk. Mark said that since he has used them he has not had a mice problem in the car, and it smells good when he gets into in the spring.

lol great thread! what i usually do with the rx7
drive it to the external garage behind the house. hit the kill switch on the battery plug in the battery tender. put in dryer sheets in the cabin and trunk put some kitty litter around the car (keeps the mice out) sta-bil in the tank close the door leave it until spring. this spring tho the rx7 is going to get some loving i need to pull the motor out and replace it or rebuild it since spun a bearing :( the chevelle will stay in the main garage and get the same treatment minus the kitty litter...lol |

drinking corona on christmas day.! |
I have always heard that Bounce dryer sheets work best to keep mice out. Also heard that Irish Spring soap works too. Just take a knife and cut slices of the soap and put them in the car.

Gonna drive it over to a heated building on Friday, Stabil in tank, disconnect battery, put the cover on it and wait til March when I get it out and bring it back home. The building I use is a Police towing company and city impound yard so theres someone there 24/7. Plus they have a few cats to take care of the mice.
Last year there was a little dust on the car but it blew off on the way home. |
Un cooked rice acts as a desicant and will absorb mosture and odors.
most gun safe desicant systems also work great in cars. moth balls keep the rats and mice away in the engine compartment. |
