Hi from the new kid

I’m only 27 but I’ve been around cars for as long as I can remember. My father has a 1970 Chevelle SS convetible that he has had for 22 years and I own a 1971 Malibu that I have had for 11 years. It was my first car and without a doubt the most fun car I’ve ever owned. I have restored or replaced almost everything on the car so far, some stuff is still isn’t in yet but that’s why I enjoy the hobby. You’re never really done. I’m in the process of a center console addition among other projects. I’m looking forward to getting to know some other chevelle people.

Welcome Jay ,70 and 71 are both good years to have. And you are right they are never done.

Hi neighbor, welcome to the site. We have a lot of members here in MI, where in Ontario do you live.

jays 1971 05-10-2011 10:56 AM

I live in Hamilton whic is about 3-4 hours east of Detroit.

Welcome Jay, as Hank mentioned theres a few of us down here in Michigan. Do you ever make it to any of the car shows over here. Would be great to have a meet many of our members face to face.

jays 1971 05-10-2011 11:12 AM

Thank you for the warm welcome. I have been to the show in St. Ignace a few times with my parents when i was younger but have done mostly small local shows and lots of crusing with my new family. Still not venturing too far from home right now as the original wiring is unreliable at best. Thats this winter's project.

grumpy 05-10-2011 11:16 AM

Well if you ever make it over to back to the bricks or the Woodward cruise look us up. Both shows are huge and offer a mind boggling amount to see.

By the way my best friends live in Canada, ones in north Windsor and the others are near Toronto. Who knows maybe in one of our trips that way we could stop by and say hi.

jays 1971 05-10-2011 11:19 AM

I would really enjoy getting to cruise out to some shows outside my area. If you are ever around let me know. the garage is always open to visitors.

flash 05-10-2011 01:45 PM

Jay ,be careful about open invitations like that as we are also known to travel a bit and you might have more visitors than you know what to do with. Just kidding ,but we have some friends up there somewhere to visit some day.

jays 1971 05-10-2011 02:02 PM

Sounds good if you are ever in the area.

Ms Grumpy 05-10-2011 02:41 PM

Welcome Jay. I can't wait to see a pic of all of your work.

And flash is not kidding when he says that about open invitations. flash and his wife are known to make some extensive road trips. Just ask him what his longest trip was last year.

My wife, Lynda, was born in Toronto and I spent a lot of time over there when I was younger, my father was born in Nova Scotia. Most of our Canadian relatives have moved or passed on so we haven't been over there in awhile. If you head this way let us know, always nice to meet another Chevelle owner.

I would like to have some pictures of the center console install ready soon as well as a few updated ones of the car in general.

The dash that will be coming out. Will be replaced by SS dash.
Attachment 1323

The console I'm in the process of installing. Original console with stainless plates to fit the B&M shifter. Didn't do any modifications to the console just making the plates to fit in the location of the original trim pieces.

Hi Jay, i'm 27 also, been into cars since I was a little kid. My great-Grandfather used to own a GMC dealership so i'm partial to GM products. I have had my Malibu for about 10 years and just picked up an SS396 project not too long ago. I like the color scheme and the console plate for the aftermarket shifter. I may be doing something similar to the SS if I keep it automatic for now.

jays 1971 05-11-2011 01:51 PM

Thanks to all for the compliments and warm welcome.

Ms Grumpy 05-11-2011 04:13 PM

I like the pics Jay. Any other plans for your car ?

jays 1971 05-11-2011 08:40 PM

This driving season I dont have many proects planned other than the console and installing a mini starter to hopefully avoid some heat related starter problems. In the off season though I will be doing a complete wiring overhaul. Installing the SS dash, probably with digital gauges and some more fabricated stainless trim in place of the A/C delete plate. I have a new th400 to install in place of the one I have now. Also looking at an LED tail light conversion, HID headlight kit and maybe pushbutton start. The SS dash was in my dad's convertible so there is a hole in it for the top switch that I need to deal with. Only going to do the start if I can find a tasteful button, will be keeping the key installed as a backup. If that doesn't work out maore stainless trim. LOL
