Offered a job this morning
I was sitting watching the morning news when my phone rang this morning. It was not the typical ring, I have different rings for different people, and I thought it was one of my girls who live out of state. It wasn't, it was my old boss. He told me that one of his Managers had just given their notice and he was taking a chance, calling me, to offer me a job.
I really liked my job, I just quit because I was really working hard on getting this site up and running as well as working on our other sites, Audiokarma and Politicalchat. Now I am in a strange place. Do I want to go back to work and punch a clock ? Do I want to go back to work and pay less for health insurance ? Do I want to go back to work and have a few extra bucks in my pocket, maybe be able to buy the tow vehicle ? But then I have to give up my freedom to do what I want, when I want. I talked to David and he, of course, doesn't want me to go back to work out of the house. He knows how much time I have put into this site and the others and he knows how nice it is to just get into the car and go to a show. He also said that he likes having me around, really ? I will tell you guys that before I left my last Management job that they did everything, and offered me a lot, to stay. I was really good at what I did and I do miss it. But I have also gotten to spend a lot of time with my family over the past year, that when I was working, I never got to do. Anyway, just wanted to put it out there and I wonder what you guys think. I need some input. |
Oh man, that sounds like a tough decision.
I would look at it this way: Do you need the money? Are you willing to give up your "free" time to work 40+ hours a week? What expenses will you have going back to work? Like gas, clothing, meals? If it were me, I would kindly pass on the offer. Sounds like you have a lot on your plate already and really enjoy the time that not punching a clock affords you. And you said, you enjoy the time with your family, that to me is more important. I wish you luck. Mike |
What you could do, and I have done this on several occasions for different things, is take a piece of paper (or use excel) and list the pros/cons of it. Give yourself a few days to think about it and list them all out. It really helps with the decision making process when you see it spelled out in black and white.

Whew.. I almost feel guilty that I am considering passing on this job, when so many people are trying to get a job.
Both of you have given me some great input. You would think it is an easy decision, but it is not. And I have turned down an offer from the same man before, so I am even more surprised that he called. |
Sounds like you need to quit watching the morning news.LOL
Talk it over with the people that count, your husband and kids. |
I really hate this. My life was going along fine. Sure I could use the extra cash, or should I say, my car could use a few more things. But this is life, there is always that bump in the road that makes you question if things could be better. There are many pros and cons in this scenario, and many people who will be affected. I talked to my mom and she said "don't do it". I respect my mom but I know that we have spent a lot of time together working on my brothers house and we have both thoroughly enjoyed the time together.
We will see what the kids have to say tonight as we talk about it at the dinner table. |
Thats a tough one but I would probably take family time if you can afford to .
|
Let me refresh that statement : As long as its not MY family I would probably do that but I dont deal with my family .
|
Go to work...slacker!! :D
I'm not greedy...I'd love to share the joy and happiness of having to get up at 4 AM every weekday. ;) |
Take the job,get all you can out of it.God only knows what is in store for this once great country especially if that socialist at the helm gets elected for another term. And keep cash and survival food kits on hand at all times.
|
I would take the job because it will be very hard to ever find another one. It depends if your old though or young. I just laid off 7 of my employees a few weeks ago. Some I've had with me for 8 years but you gotta do what you gotta do.

I know at times I wish my wife worked outside of the home, but having her home is nice. Good luck on what ever you decide.

Running these websites is a 24/7 job. This site is still small. Audiokarma, our largest site has over 120,000 members. And that is because we have put the time into it, and built it to what it is today. Someday I hope to have Chevelleforum there, or should I say it will be there ! |

At dinner last night I asked my girls, 11 and 14, what they thought about mommy going back to work. My 11 year old said "Yeah....more money to buy us stuff" (yeah, like that's gonna happen), my 14 year old said "No...you and daddy don't argue as much since you don't work that job anymore".
Saw my brother this morning and he just had this "I don't know what to tell you" look on his face. He seemed to think that it was not a good idea. I am really only considering taking the job because of the cost of health insurance. I am leaning toward not taking the job. I still am not 100% sure. As soon as I am, I will post my decision. I have to say thank you to everyone for giving me great things to think about. |
If you are comfortable where you are, don't take the job. I see lots more stress being put on you. You don't need that. The time that you will have to spend away from the family will never be replaced. It sounds like you already have a full time job keeping the sites going. The kids are pretty observant too, with the less fighting comment. After typing this out, I now say STAY HOME!!!!

I know that over the past year my relationship with David has gotten stronger. Heck I don't think that we ever talked this much in the 14 years we have been married. Partly because I worked from 4am - 4 or 5pm, 5 or 6 days a week. Running a restaurant is a very time consuming job, and if someone does not show up, you gotta go in.
I can't think of more than one reason to go back. So I think that my decision has been made. I am gonna stay home and make this the best damn site out there. |
Glad to hear you made up your mind. Your girls will be the ones who will gain the most by having Mom home. I know my kids did by having my wife home for them.
|
I think that you made the right choice. Good luck.

Sorry if my comment was taken in the wrong context. |
Good for you. Must have been a tuff decision.

I made the call this morning. I told my old boss that I have made many commitments that would not allow me to commit to the job 100%. I am not the kind of person that would take a position without giving it 100%, which right now I cannot. He was very disappointed but also very impressed that I was straight forward with him. And I was told that whenever I wanted a job all I had to do was call him.
The past few days have been hard, this was a difficult decision. And I want to thank everyone for their input and help. I really appreciated it. |
I'm glad you feel happy with your choice, you have to go with your gut sometimes.Too many choices to make today, nothing is easy.
|
I think you made a good call.
|
Thanks guys.
