1st car show for me and my car today.

Today I took my son Jacob with me to the Centerline Lions car show sponsored by USMA and many local businesses. It was nice seeing a lot of old friends.

We ended hanging out with my friends Wayne and Cindy who own a 70 Duster. Yes, I was sitting with them by the Duster. Wayne used to drag race with us many years ago at Detroit Dragway and it was really nice reminising about all the fun we had.

When it came time for the awards they had them classified by year or type of car. When it got to the 60's cars, they did awards by every two years. So I am figuring by the time they get to 72 I might have a chance of getting something. But...when they finished the 60's they announced that the next group of awards was for 70-75. What ? I have no chance, Waynes car is pretty cool, and there were many nice cars out there in those years. So as we are listening to them call out the awards, we hear them call Wayne's name, which I knew they would. And a lot of other nice cars as well. Jacob was standing there getting more bummed and more bummed, he really wanted a trophy. Then out of no where...they called my name and car as Best in Show. WHAT ?? Are you kidding me ? Jacob was so thrilled he ran up and got the trophy. The dang thing is almost as tall as he is. It just barely fit in the backseat of my car.

When we got home David said what the heck are we going to do with this thing. Well Jacob volunteered to clean a spot in his room, and that is where it sits right now. Nice first outing.

Believe me I would have had many, many pictures. But my expensive Cannon camera took a crap and it is on it's way back to Cannon for "service". I have to dig up my old camera, and take a pic of the trophy with Jacob and my car.

I will post one in the next few days. Remembered I put the old camera in the trunk of my car and I have to get it out.

Congrats! It's always cool to win your first trophy. The first of many, I'm sure.

Ms Grumpy 07-01-2012 01:52 PM

I think that winning trophies is more important to my kids. I knew when we were putting my car together that I was going to build it to be what I wanted it to be. I wasn't looking to be the car at all the car shows, that wins all the trophies. To me, I like the cars that have imperfections. That is what makes each car an individual.

That is not saying that I don't appreciate the "show" cars, the cars that people spend all week spit shining, just to go to a show with the expectation of bringing home another trophy. I am in awe of some of the cars and they way they look and shine.

If any of you have ever seen Ms flash's 1972 Malibu convertible, you would be surprised to know how many miles they put on that car every year. And it is a beautiful car, that with it's history, should win an award at every show they go to. Another one of my favorites, even though I haven't seen it in person, is grandsports Chevelle. He may not drive it as much as flash does, but it is more a part of his family than even he realized, until lately.

These cars, to many of us, are a part of our family. And how many times do we win a trophy for a member of our family. We just want them to be happy, dependable, clean and something to be proud of. No trophy required, but they are nice. :)

Its nice to be recognized for all the work and effort and money put into these toys of ours but the trophy I care the most about are the friends weve made along the way .Driver cars like ours cost as much to restore and maintain as the show cars that arent really driven but we just love to drive ours and we too love to look at the true show cars to see all the work and effort put forth to restore them as they once were. Im glad there is room for all our tastes and different ways of enjoying these working art forms we call cars .

That is so cool,Nancy! Jacob will cherish that trophy for a lot of years.

Send from my Motorola bag phone 10 miles west of the Twilight Zone.

Ms Grumpy 07-01-2012 09:50 PM

Yes he will. Everytime I go out the door he asks when are we going to the next car show. I have spent some time explaining to him that I don't go to the car shows to win trophies. I go because I enjoy the cars and the people. A trophy is just a "bonus" and there are no guarantees that you will win a trophy. He has to know and understand this. We were really lucky last weekend and I hope he realizes that.

shadowgray396 07-01-2012 11:09 PM

That's one nice looking young lad you have. It's neat that he like going with you to car shows. It's some thing he will always remember.

Ms Grumpy 07-02-2012 01:13 AM

And something that I will treasure, forever. I spent a lot of time doing stuff with my older son Matthew, he loved going to the drag strip with me. I have so many great memories from that time with Matt, and I hope to have just as many, if not more with Jacob.
