1964 Chevelle Paint and body next
Well the car show season is over for now here in Arizona. It's starting to get too damn hot. I finally got around to removing all the stickers from the car. This alone made a big difference in the appearance. I will be starting the body work next.
Here is a before pic http://www.allenitllc.com/hotrods/ch...as%20small.jpg And After http://www.allenitllc.com/hotrods/chevelle/DSC00410.JPG http://www.allenitllc.com/hotrods/chevelle/DSC00414.JPG |
I finally made some progress on the car this weekend. I've removed all the painted stripes and started on some bodywork.
http://www.allenitllc.com/hotrods/ch...work%20001.jpg http://www.allenitllc.com/hotrods/ch...t/DSCF3135.jpg The first hole I filled in was the old rear antenna location http://www.allenitllc.com/hotrods/ch...t/DSCF3136.jpg I just cut out a patch to fit and welded it in place. http://www.allenitllc.com/hotrods/ch...t/DSCF3137.jpg http://www.allenitllc.com/hotrods/ch...t/DSCF3138.jpg |
The next repair is on the back of the drivers front fender. This entire area was rotted away and fiberglassed in so it had to be removed.
http://www.allenitllc.com/hotrods/ch...t/DSCF3141.jpg http://www.allenitllc.com/hotrods/ch...nt%20patch.jpg Once I cut out the bad metal I ran into a big problem. My inner fender support is just as rotted away and will need to be rebuilt from scratch. Yikes! http://www.allenitllc.com/hotrods/ch...t/DSCF3142.jpg My lower rear quarters are rusted away and will need to be cut out and replaced as well. I need to buy the patches for these areas still Passenger side: http://www.allenitllc.com/hotrods/ch...nger%20bad.jpg Drivers side: http://www.allenitllc.com/hotrods/ch...iver%20bad.jpg |
Looks completely different with the stickers and stripes removed ,looks like you will have the rust repaired soon .
|
Looks like you have your work cut out for you. You doing a great job on it. I konw it will be better then new when you are finished. Keep us posted on your progress. We all like pictures.

I completed the front fender patch last weekend.

This weekend I was determined to figure out how I was going to get my trunk mounted again. When the car was tubbed all of the original hinge hardware and mounts were cut off to make room for the wheel tubs. This wasn't an issue when it was being raced since we just pinned on a fiberglass trunk lid, but now that I wanted my steel lid back on and hinged I had to design a new system.
I found some hinges off of a 2000 cavalier at the local pull a part. I really liked these hinges sine they were completely different from any normal rear trunk hinge. Here are the hinges I pulled. Closed: http://www.allenitllc.com/hotrods/ch...nge-closed.jpg Open: http://www.allenitllc.com/hotrods/ch...hinge-open.jpg I made a pair of platforms that I could weld up underneath so the hinges would bolt right on. http://www.allenitllc.com/hotrods/ch...inge-plate.jpg http://www.allenitllc.com/hotrods/ch...ge-plate-2.jpg |
As you can see my hinges are quite a bit closer together now. They are mounted 24.5" apart. LOL
http://www.allenitllc.com/hotrods/ch...es-mounted.jpg It's hinged again!! WooHoo! These hinges also have the mounting balls for strong arm hydraulic lift supports. I hope they will be strong enough to hold it open. We shall find out in time. I used 3/8" Riv-Nuts on the ribbing of the trunk lid side to mount the bracket and they feel very strong. http://www.allenitllc.com/hotrods/ch...inges-done.jpg |
I worked on the drivers side rear quarter panel today. Came across some funny findings as I poked a hole through the rust. Amazing how much crap fell down into this area and was lost forever until I cut it open. LOL
Here is my replacement panel. I'm going to cut what I need from this panel to do my repairs. http://www.allenitllc.com/hotrods/ch...151634_548.jpg Here is most of what fell out. The yellow ball is my lucky fooseball which I lost over 20 years ago! haha! http://www.allenitllc.com/hotrods/ch...082656_811.jpg Then after digging around some more I found this. It's an old shifter knob from my muncie. http://www.allenitllc.com/hotrods/ch...082704_330.jpg Most of the bad area removed. http://www.allenitllc.com/hotrods/ch...104511_690.jpg And my patch. http://www.allenitllc.com/hotrods/ch...104522_569.jpg Welded in. http://www.allenitllc.com/hotrods/ch...112155_235.jpg |
And all ground down.
http://www.allenitllc.com/hotrods/ch...115947_615.jpg Second patch. http://www.allenitllc.com/hotrods/ch...141905_312.jpg And all done! http://www.allenitllc.com/hotrods/ch...155539_153.jpg Next thing to tackle is the passenger side which is just as bad. |
Looking good .
|
So did you take care of the rust on the inside also?
|
The inside was still solid so I just scraped it off and hit it with 2 coats of rust converter and then sealed it.
|
I had Friday off this week so I flipped the car around and started working on the passenger rear quarter. This one was in bad shape and had some extra large holes in it from the battery charging lugs that used to be on the side of the car.
I started out by cutting the bad metal off the car. http://www.allenitllc.com/hotrods/ch...-quarter-1.jpg I then fixed the wheel tub and corner of floor section and neautralized the inside rust. http://www.allenitllc.com/hotrods/ch...-quarter-2.jpg New panel cut and ready. http://www.allenitllc.com/hotrods/ch...-quarter-3.jpg Welded in place. http://www.allenitllc.com/hotrods/ch...-quarter-4.jpg And finally complate! ;) http://www.allenitllc.com/hotrods/ch...-quarter-5.jpg |
It sure is nice to see the rust get cut out and new metal welded in. One of these days, I'll finish up the primer and paint work on mine. I can't wait to see the progress on this one!
|
Looking good. Also be aware rust converters don't pentrate deep enough into the metal to stop rust. POR 15 or epoxy primer is what most people use.

Hey gang! I've been busy on the car and haven't posted any progress. After fixing and replacing all my rust issues I primed it with a high build primer and blocked it all out smooth.
http://www.allenitllc.com/hotrods/ch...20chevelle.jpg I then turned my garage into a paint booth!! Yes I know I look good in that suit! LOL!! http://www.allenitllc.com/hotrods/ch...nt%20booth.jpg I then laid down my epoxy primer. http://www.allenitllc.com/hotrods/ch...%20epoxied.jpg Next was to spray my base coats and clear. The booth worked really well and exhausted quickly. http://www.allenitllc.com/hotrods/ch...20complete.jpg I've spent the past 4 days cutting and buffing the paint and it turned out great! http://www.allenitllc.com/hotrods/ch...0completed.jpg |
Looks much better than before ,you did a good job.
|
Thanks Flash! it's slowly getting there. I need to get all my chrome and glass installed next. ;)
|
It looks like you did a nice job on the paint!
|
That looks sweet, looking very nice.
|

Hey gang, I finally got a new hood worthy of some paint to match the car. The hood was delivered last weekend and I painted it today.
http://www.allenitllc.com/hotrods/ch...d/new_hood.jpg http://www.allenitllc.com/hotrods/ch...od_painted.jpg What better place to let it dry then on the car! ;) http://www.allenitllc.com/hotrods/ch.../hood_side.jpg http://www.allenitllc.com/hotrods/ch...hood_front.jpg |
