Good deal?
Hello, I am new to the forums but a long time Chevelle lover. I have an opportunity to buy one that is almost perfect. But I want some experienced opinions.
Short run down: 1968 Chevelle with 86k orig miles, clean title. 454 Big Block Built and tuned with 596hp. Long list of expensive top grade parts that I don't remember went into the engine. New paint job, glass will be installed before purchase but I have to put the rest together. He has everything for it, from the carpet and door panels to the outside chrome parts (inc bumpers). I will just need to finish putting it back together. The price is firm $17k. http://leowaste.com/chevelle/IMG_4289.JPG http://leowaste.com/chevelle/IMG_4290.JPG http://leowaste.com/chevelle/IMG_4291.JPG http://leowaste.com/chevelle/IMG_4292.JPG http://leowaste.com/chevelle/IMG_4295.JPG http://leowaste.com/chevelle/IMG_4299.JPG Good deal or run away? |
Can you size down the pictures, hard to really look at. Tail lights say it is a 68 along with the front fenders, not a 69.
yes sorry is 68, typo. How to size down?
You can go to the upper left corner to user cp and start a photo album. If you copy the BB code and paste that into you post the pictures should come in smaller. Or we can go look in your album at them. Putting any car back together is a lot of work, and you never know if you are getting everything you need to finish the car.
If I did have all or most of the parts to reassemble, is this a good price?
fixed images

For $17,000 you should get a car that is completely assembled and missing nothing ,I would keep on looking .Where are you located ,we might be able to point you to one if we know your location. Will another year work for you ? The 68 is one of my favorite years but they dont hold their value as well as a 69 or 70 .I know of a 69 that will be for sale soon but it is in the Nashville area ,he may also have others for sale .

And by the way ,WELCOME .

I am in Wichita KS. What I really want is a double headlight 68-70 design with a 454 in it, built. Black or darker color with 4 speed. |
Here is what I like about it. It has a fully built 454 that puts out a ton of power and backed with a new clutch/trany rebuild. The paint is new and fresh with a decent job (would say 8/10). The owner showed me the large amounts of new parts he has for it waiting to be put on. He also noted that he separated the body from frame to replace some seals or something that made it squeak around corners.
What I dont like is just that, I have to put it on. From what I can see...... Mount both front and rear bumper with front grill. Lay carpet inside (Pre-cut and fitted) and remount seats. The seats have precut covers ready but the old looks okay so not worried about that now. Put both door handles back on and inside door molding. put on trunk lock and trunk Chevelle logo He has showed me all this stuff brand new, ready for bolt on. It has no radio components (which is okay with me for now) |

17k is way to much for the car in that condition. The last thing that should be put in is the windshield and back window. Car is much easier to work on with them out, plus if the headliner is not in it it should be done first. What you have is a guy trying to get his money back out of the car. I hope I don't get flamed for this, but 68 is one of the least popular years for the Chevelle because most people like the 69 because it had no wing windows.
Sounds like he did a lot of work to the motor, what about transmission? Is it a 12 bolt or 10 bolt? Do the gauges all work or have they been restored? New or old wiring harnesses in the car? There are a lot of things may or may not had attention too. Does he have any pictures on how the body looked before paint? 138 vin or 136? (138 is a true SS) What brand of interior did he buy for the car? Did he put new suspension under it or detail the frame out? Is it a Macco Paint job? Sorry I could go on, I'm not trying to burst your dream. I agree with Flash for that price I have seen some nice 68's out there. I purchased my car in boxes and it took a lot of time and money to finish my car. Been there and done that. I did forget to say welcome to the site. |
He said he put new trans in it. Not sure on bolts.
Original guages work but he added a rpm guage. I know its not an SS, just regular. new suspension. And the paint job was done by his son who is a painter. but all good points. Im leaning more towards not tbh |
I agree with Ray ,the 68 seems to be the Red Headed stepchild among Chevelles ,Im one of the few who like the 68 better than the 69 .Its a buyers market right now ,$17K should buy a lot more car than that one .
TY all for input. I am not going to move on it. Just too much risk/work for price. And he wont budge.
There are much better and complete cars out there ,I can put you in touch with the right person to get a great car and he is highly respected in the Chevelle World .
Welcome. I think that flash should be able to help you, if you choose to look further.

Looking at this one now. I want 4 speed/black with double headlights (68-70). 17k or under. |
I know the the front seats are not 68 seats, I believe they are 65 buckets. The heater hose routing does not look correct to me, and some of the wiring under the hood is questionable. How much work do you want to do yourself. Any car at a dealer will be over priced, so there should be room to negotiate the price. It looks like a car that someone put a lot of parts on it to make a buck. Find someone in your area that knows Chevelles and take that person along with you to look at a car you want to buy. I got burn for 15k on my first Chevelle, so again I talking from experence.
Wow it does have 65 seats. :/
Well Flash, does your guy know of a ~$17k Chevelle thats black or dark gray with 4spd and not a junker? |
That seat thing bugs me. He has a white 69 I might ask if he would swap the seats for. The wiring and heater hose thing I can fix or have my grandfather help me fix. But the seats will cost me.
My guy is Chuck Hanson ,he is not a dealer but he buys and sells quite a few Chevelles .I can ask what he has for sale .
Awesome. Can't wait! ty :P
Chuck is a great guy, you can't go wrong with him.
I have a couple for you to consider of Chuck's .Once you see pics if you are interested I can put you in touch with him. Just saw him saturday at the Peachstate Chevelle Show .
I know I am new here but I have been around cars for a long time and the pictures of that engine do not show a rebuilt amazing engine , they show a tired older engine...I would definetly want to see slips for the rebuild and dates on it. That engine bay looks like a car that has sat for a long time not a 590 hp unit. Just my 2 cents.
Yeah I told him I wont move on it. That black one I like, but he said everything sound stock on the engine. and from the pictures I saw of the underneath...it looks more like a car that was kept up over the years with new paint then a restored car.
