Anyone know Ford 351, FI no start ideas
 

I sent my 95 Ford E250 , 351 fuel injected van down to Florida. 25,000 miles, sits a lot, run it a few times a year. Guy driving it got 25 miles from destination, van starts to run bad. Acts like no fuel. Change fuel filter. Van sat for an hour while getting filter. Van started up, ran, but a little rough. Drove 20 miles, quits again. Let it set for 30 mins, started back up. My guess would be ignition related or fuel pump. Only thing is, I don't know these modern engines and all the computer junk. I think I'll just send it to the dealership mechanics.

My money is on fuel pump, it is acting the same way my Dakota was doing and changed the fuel pump and it went away. With all the sitting the van does not help/ Good luck.

Will check the cap. I'm also leaning towards the FP. The pump is in the fuel tank and it's expensive.

Yep it cost about $250 and about 3 hours labor when I did it myself. They will be able to test it by putting a presurre gage at the FI to see if it get the pressure it needs.

Had a fuel pump problem on the Chevy suburban and by tapping on the bottom of the tank it would get it working again. It would stick, the other thing they told me is not to let the tank get below a 1/4 if possible. The gas around the fuel pump keeps it cool and when the tank gets to low it heats the pump up and leads to an earlier failure of the pump.

Another vote for fuel pump or possibly pump relay.

I've heard that said about every car/truck that has an electric pump. Which means all the manufacturers use a pump that must be submerged in fuel. Yet no manufacturer ever says keep the tank at least 1/4 full. I'm just not buying it. As long as the pump is pumping fuel it's probably being cooled by that fuel.

My brother took it to the Ford dealership in Crystal River yesterday. They can't find anything wrong. They did a fuel pressure test and hooked up the diagnostic thing to the computer to see if it would "throw a code", but it didn't. The guy that drove it down to Florida put a can of dry-gas in it, as he thought it was water in the fuel. When Doug drove it to the dealership, about 30 miles, it didn't miss a lick. What is bad about this deal is that every time I drive it, I'll be expecting it to break down on me. I'll just sell it. Hey Beckman, wanna make another deal!!!!

What would I do with a creeper van, hang around school yards? I'm looking at downsizing as I have 6 vehicles now and I drive 4 of them.

I still say it is something to do with the fuel pump like maybe the sock around it is dirty and not letting enough fuel sometimes.

I figure when it does quit again, which I know it will, I'll pull a plug and check for fire. If I have fire, I'll pull the fuel line at the outlet side of the filter, turn the key on, and see if its pumping. Don't know what else to do to troubleshoot it. Maybe I'll take the whole EFI junk off and install a carb. Put points in it while I'm at it.

It is so sad that they have all this computer crap on these motors and tell us they can use a computer to diagnose the problem. But then you are at the mercy of the computer in your situation Tony. I just hope that you will figure out the problem soon.

Maybe, just maybe it was a bad tank of gas and putting the can of dry gas in there helped it out. Just a thought.

I hate computers on vehicles. I can't work on the newer Harleys because of them.

Tony, what dates will you be here?. I'll have to check the distance. We have the dog with us, she's almost 14 yrs old. We can't leave her alone in the motorhome for too long. Wish you were going to be here when we're heading home. There's a nice campground Ocala we stay overnight at.

I'll be here until the 2nd. If I can last that long. Got 126 joist hangers installed today, all off scaffolding, and got 44 of the 2x6x10 ceiling joists installed. Lots of trips up and down the ladder to get on and off the scaffold.

Damn Tony your back is going to be killing you...your too old for all that manual labor but with your new improved Heart arteries you must feel like your 20 something again.

I was just thinking again about your van and if I were you I would have a fuel system flush done on it where they blow out the lines and injectors with some sort of chemical as I image from sitting it is gummy in them there lines...just like our arteries with Plague..ha

Oh man!!! We just finished for the day. We got six walls built and standing up. I feel like a new person with my heart oil lines cleaned out!

Yup, definitely time to start moving north. Sitting outside here, 10 AM and it's already 79* and humid. Been in the mid to upper 80's this week. Took a drive up to Miami a few days ago and it was 92*

EDIT: 88* at 1 PM and that was with no sun. All cloudy and overcast.

Hank, I don't know about 350, but I do know I'm 25 miles from I-75 and 200. That is the Ocala exit that I get off on.

200, SW College Rd? That is exit 350, maybe we can make this work out.

That's the one Hank. Go west on Hgwy 39 about 20 miles, just past Stumpknockers restraunt, turn left and go 5 miles.

I'll use the GPS, Attractions, TW's place and we're good to go. I'll give you a call after we figure out the dates. Rates are cheaper by the week or month and we have to call the place in Ocala to see if we can get in. I'll call you in a a few days after we figure it out.

What I should have said is go 20 miles west on 200. Turn right on 39, which is also named Withlacoochie Trail. My phone doesn't work all the time out here, so if I miss your call, keep trying.

Been having trouble getting my laptop online via the phone. I think T-Mobile finally has things straightened out.

Anyway, don't think it's going to work out Tony. We paid here from mid-Feb to mid-March then mid-March to mid-April. No refunds, If we leave here early we lose the money and we have to pay for a lot in Ocala. That's about $600 just to come up to Ocala for a week. I'm disappointed, was looking forward to seeing you and your place. Guess we'll have to plan a little better next time.

Well. I'm crushed, like Ric said I would be. If you stay out of the strip club for what, two nights, that would cover the 600 bucks. Fine then, give the prettiest stripper there an extra 20 bucks and tell her it's from me.

I've been busy from before daylight until dark every day. All the house interior walls are done, except some backing, I have the tub and shower set in place and plumbed, and have most of the vents and stacks run. Should be able to start on water lines and the walls in the shop today. Weather has been great here. Kathy is dealing with a bunch of mud at home.

Maybe next year then Hank. I plan to be down here quite a bit next year.

Tony but he is helping these single mothers put themselves through nursing school one dollar at a time, so he is doing a nobel thing in his eyes.
