what in the. ...again??

Ok I am officially lost! Driving the car tonight for trunk or treat and it did it again. Started hurking and jerking on me and then shut off on me. The gas tank is full and again fuel pump is showing me zero at the gauge. What am I doing wrong here? 2 fuel pumps on less then 150 miles. I am lost!!

chevymaher 11-01-2014 03:18 AM

Check the carb. Hit the gas are the accelerator pumps squirting? If the gauge is showing empty on a full tank it sounds like a electrical issue issue. Like a main power feed is intermittently cutting out.

SS Shaun 11-01-2014 07:43 PM

its a mechanical pump :(

chevymaher 11-01-2014 08:23 PM

What I meant was see if it has gas in the carb. If it does start looking at spark issues. It is just odd you would keep killing fuel pumps they last forever.

SS Shaun 11-01-2014 11:42 PM

my buddy let me use his pump and it started and had 6 psi what does this mean?

chevymaher 11-02-2014 12:00 AM

I would be checking the fuel pump rod that is in the engine. See if it is freely moving in and out. If it sticks in the bore it isn't pumping.
Pulling the tank and checking the rubber hoses for cracks, suckin air. Looking in the tank for contaminates. Gum parafin is what old 60's gas had that clogged the tanks. Check the fuel lines for rust. Also for possibly suckin air.
I would sure take anything before the pump apart and be inspecting it all. Take the fuel filter apart and see if there is rust or shavings in it. Anything that would destroy the diaphragm or make the check valve stick open.

shadowgray396 11-02-2014 12:11 AM

Most likely the pump you got failed. Get one from GM when you replace it.

SS Shaun 11-02-2014 06:36 PM

gas tank is new all the lines are brand new and all of the rubber hoses have ss braided lines also all brand new. I am thinking its bad pump but how come its going from 8.5 psi down to 0 psi. i am starting to think my push rod is to long and might be over pressing the pump. what do you guys think?

Ken Hayes 11-02-2014 07:04 PM

Shaun, it sounds like you might be right about the push rod. It is not the stock rod is it?

chevymaher 11-03-2014 05:25 AM

I don't let things go. I would be peeling the pump apart find out why it is failing.
I have driven some junk in my time. I have had them leak but never not pump.

SS Shaun 11-03-2014 07:48 AM

Ken its an Comp Cam push rod i got from summit i have the part number let me look it up and i will post it. I dont want to cut the pump because it still covered under warranty i think

Stock pump pushrod is 5 3/4" long and 1/2" diameter...BBC & SBC are the same.

SS Shaun 11-03-2014 02:11 PM

here is the push rod i am using in my motor now
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/cca-4607

Ken Hayes 11-03-2014 02:40 PM

Well, that's the correct size Shaun. I guess its time to go electric.

BillsCamino 11-03-2014 03:09 PM

I'd pull the fuel pump and take a good loon look at it's pump lever.
Any indications of the pushrod skipping off the pump lever...either on the end or off to the side.
Like I mentioned previously...earlier this summer, I got FOUR bad pumps in a row from O'Reilly. The levers were too short allowing the pushrod to fall off the lever's end.

SS Shaun 11-04-2014 08:19 AM

well i think i am going to have to put the blame on the push rod. I can't get it out for some reason! I pulled the fuel pump out, opened the screwed in bolt on the bottom of the block and turned the key once just to see if it would move and it moved but only seemed to be about a half inch to 3/4 of an inch. I can push the rod up and spin it freely. I got a needle nose and tried to pull on it and nothing. i put as much force on it as i could, but nothing! now what? i can't leave that push rod in place and go electric can i? I have to remove that rod correct?

mestorod70 11-04-2014 09:41 AM

At the front of the block there is a 3/8 bolt hole that intersects
the pushrod hole....Make sure the bolt that is supposed to seal this hole
is not to long and rubing on the pump rod.

SS Shaun 11-04-2014 10:27 AM

not sure what you mean its a big block i thought only the small block had that

SS Shaun 11-04-2014 10:29 AM

this is what you are talking about

chevymaher 11-04-2014 11:33 AM

That is it.

SS Shaun 11-04-2014 01:55 PM

thats small block big block doent have that i thought

chevymaher 11-04-2014 01:59 PM

Has a fuel pump there it has it. Newer electric fuel pump trucks may not. But same applies to the small block 6's and 4's. Once they had a factory electric. They rough cast it but never bored the hole to fit the rod.

BillsCamino 11-04-2014 04:04 PM

Push rod must have a mushroomed end. What style cam is in the engine? HR, flat tappet?

SS Shaun 11-04-2014 09:13 PM

Flat tappet, i got it out finally

http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps07953957.jpg

http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n...psa82b45e2.jpg

so it looks like the bronze tip mushroomed and collapsed so i guess i know now i need a new push rod :)

Ken Hayes 11-04-2014 11:14 PM

Look for the 7/16" missing from that rod. You should get this one from Summit, Carter PR-1 - Carter Mechanical Fuel Pump Pushrods # CTR-PR-1 $11.97 this one is chrome moly with no bronze tips.

BillsCamino 11-05-2014 06:32 AM

No bronze tip pushrod needed on a flat tappet cam!! I hope it didn't eat up the lobe.

Next question is...where is all that metal that's missing from the pushrod??

SS Shaun 11-05-2014 09:34 AM

i was wondering the same thing about where is all the bronze then i looked at the push rod some more it literally looks like the bronze was smashed in the push rod. If not it must of broke apart while it was running. I drained the oil and ran it in a strainer. I found some small parts of bronze like metal but i was not sure about it. I put new oil in it and i have normal oil pressure. I don't know what else to do as far as all the extra metal.

Ken Hayes 11-05-2014 10:35 AM

Shaun, is that pushrod hollow? If so, seein your not gonna use it again, cut it and see if you can push the bronze piece out of it. 7/16" of metal is a lot to lose. I know those bronze ends are not that long.

SS Shaun 11-05-2014 09:47 PM

Ken you called it bro. I cut it and there it was a nice big thick piece of bronze stuffed in it

SS Shaun 11-06-2014 11:27 AM
