New Truck

Been looking at buying a new truck. Got it down between a Chevrolet 1500 Silverado and the GMC Sierra. Looked at Ford and Toyota and decide no. I have a Tundra I have had for 10 years. This most likely will be my last truck I buy before I retire in 6 years. I'm leaning toward the GMC. They're having a great sale on them and I like the look better. Any have the GMC?

flash 03-15-2015 08:50 AM

I dont have anything newer than a 2004 Ford Sport Trac ,have not even looked at new trucks as I dont want a payment .I like the GMC grill better on the newer trucks .

mestorod70 03-15-2015 10:36 AM

Thinking about a chevy colorado.
Pot is legal in colorado...so ive heard...lol

shadowgray396 03-15-2015 12:12 PM

I hear you about the payment. Haven't had one for over ten years. Most I have gone is a couple of years then I pay it off. I have enough to put down to keep the payment very low. I looked at the Colorado, had the seat back all the way and that gave about a foot of leg room in the back. Lol. Just found a 2014 GMC with 8k on it and can save another 10k on the price. Going to go look at it today. Need something that will tow my car trailer better.

Hank70SS 03-16-2015 08:38 PM

GMC/Chevy pretty much the same. GMC has a little nicer interior and a different front grill. Beyond that it's the same chassis, engine, trans. I have 2 neighbors and a good friend with GMC's, they all like them. I had 2 Chevy's and my son has a 2013 he likes. If you want to haul things the Duramax diesel is a great engine, cost some bucks though. For occasional the gas V8 is a good solid engine. The new ones have every option a car has and ride better than a lot of small cars.

shadowgray396 03-16-2015 09:34 PM

Duramax is a good engine. Around here diesel cost more then premium gas and an oil change is now around $100 bucks with all the additives. But just to pull a car trailer a few hundred miles a year and drive it back and forth to work is not worth the extra 5 grand or more it cost. Owned 2 diesel truck and hated the maintenance cost on them. Both trucks went through the transmission several times and the turbo had issues. Not a GM product. For that reason I'm staying with gas. The one I'm looking at has all the options. I like the grill and interior on the GMC better. Plus the 10k in rebates right now.

Bought a new F150 Super Crew STX Sport a few months ago. Love the 360hp 5.0L!!
And you could camp out in the back seat.
Although owned GMCs in the past, just not a fan personally of the exaggerated fender flare stamping styling on the latest Chevy/GMC trucks.

I have a 2014 GMC Sierra. I have had it for 6 months and have 12000 miles on it. Its a nice truck. The issues I have is that the upper dash panels vibrates, seems to be a common problem and the dealer wont fix it. And the tires wont balance, vibrates like crazy at highway speeds and the dealer wont fix that either, they tried once and said sorry nothing we can do.
Over all its a nice truck. Super quiet. I had to get used to all the display options. The six speed trans is another thing I have to get used to with all the shifting. When you want to pass or get on it , it has a mind of its own and drops down hard.

Ms Grumpy 03-17-2015 07:17 PM

The Silverado gets my vote. I have always wanted one.

Unfortunately...yes.

Ray Barnes 03-25-2015 01:44 PM

Ray,
If you haven't bought a GM truck yet. A little advice... take it for a long test drive on the highway. Their are a lot of issues with vibration at speeds around 70mph +. Look at some of the truck forums about vibration and you will get an idea of what I'm talking about. They are saying 1 in 5 have this issue. Mine is at the dealership again for the third time for this issue and they are having a hard time figuring it out. They have tried balancing the wheels twice. Now they are replacing the drive shaft and front drive axle. They are just throwing parts at it to see if they can figure it out. I'm not alone on this.
Just thought I would share this because it sounds like you plan on keeping it for awhile. I spent $40K+ and plan on keeping it for awhile, if it stays together. I drive a lot of miles so we will see if it holds up.

shadowgray396 03-25-2015 02:14 PM

Thanks Ray for the info. I will check some of the truck forums out.

carpoor 03-25-2015 05:06 PM

A friend of mine just bought a lightly used 2013 Silverado. (9k miles) He's only had it five days, but it seems to be a great truck so far. It's V8, automatic, 2WD. He traded in his 2011 GT mustang, before it needed several thousand dollars of maintenance. Plus he is getting to the point of needing a truck.

grandsport 03-25-2015 08:26 PM

Now this is a truck! Just got this Sport not too long ago!

shadowgray396 03-25-2015 09:45 PM

Only one problem. It's a Dodge. Lol. Had Dodge trucks with Hemi's in them for work for 3 years. Great motor, rest of the truck was terrible.

Ray Barnes 03-26-2015 09:55 AM

The issue of vibration has been on the 2014 and 2015 models. I'm sure they all can't have this issue, but I would definitely take it for a good test drive before I signed on the bottom line.

Hank70SS 03-27-2015 12:20 PM

My neighbor Darrel has a 2015 GMC. He had it back to the dealer several times for the vibration issue. They finally sent it to the engineers at the GM proving grounds in Milford. They had it for close to a month. Replaced tires, I think all 4 wheels and at least 1 half-shaft. They got his fixed but I'm not sure they know exactly what fixed it. I think it was the wheels, they were sent back to the manufacturer.

Ray Barnes 03-30-2015 10:53 AM

They have had mine for a week. They balanced the wheels twice. They said they are in speck. Now they are replacing the drive shaft and the front axle shaft. I guess we will see if they get it fixed.

shadowgray396 03-30-2015 02:12 PM

I have put a new truck on hold until I do some more research.

Ray Barnes 03-31-2015 06:48 AM

Ray. I have been in a new Dodge and Ford and I would still take my truck over the two. I have owned a lot of trucks over the years and this is the most comfortable and quiet truck I have been in. If or when you decide, just take it for a good test drive on the highway. They all don't have this issue.

shadowgray396 03-31-2015 08:55 AM

I just looked at a 2014 GMC from a older couple with 8k on the odometer. They have not had any problems and it drove out fine. Has everything on it and had a hard cover over the bed. Thinking about it. I can save about 12k on the price of a new one.

flash 03-31-2015 11:14 AM

That is still practically new .I would love to have a new truck but I despise payments anymore ,just 5 more and my tractor is paid for ,then Im completely debt free .

Ken Hayes 03-31-2015 11:54 AM

12K is a good size chunk of change. 8K on it, hell its just over the break-in.........GO 4 IT !!

Ray Barnes 03-31-2015 01:49 PM

Sounds like a good deal. I just spent $900 for a folding hard cover, it's sitting on the garage floor with running boards, bed rug and a leveling kit. Now all I need is my truck back.

Same here, I almost plunked down $10K on a leftover 2012 Ram after I sold the Monte Carlo. Glad I didn't, life happens and I would be having a tough time paying a truck payment right now.

shadowgray396 04-04-2015 08:10 AM

Looked at a Tundra yesterday. Mine has been a really good truck for 10 years. Have had no problems with it. Only thing I guess Toyoto doesn't care about gas mileage. List the truck at 13 to 18 mpg. Thought the standard was to bring them up. My 2005 does better then that, but does have a smaller v8 in it. It still has plenty of power for what I need it for.

carpoor 04-04-2015 12:08 PM

I'm going to need a new truck... swerved to miss Bambi Wednesday night. Slid, bounced off a concrete barrier twice. Truck is totalled. :(

Sorry to hear that. Hope you are alright. Drove a Ford F150 today with the V6 motor. Had plenty of power for what I need it for. Seem to be a nice truck.

carpoor 04-04-2015 06:51 PM

I'm physically OK, financially over a barrel.

A good friend of mine has a 2012 F150 he bought new. Nice truck, horrible fuel mileage. He constantly says he should have bought a V8 truck instead. His was in for service for a week once, his loaner was identical to his truck - but had the 5 liter V8. He claims it got 2-3 MPG better than his V6.

Ms Grumpy 04-05-2015 07:07 PM

Glad to hear that you are OK. I hope that you will be able to sort the truck issue out soon.

carpoor 04-11-2015 01:16 PM

Did you find a truck Ray?

I bought a replacement today.

Ms Grumpy 04-11-2015 06:42 PM

Ray, you will be lucky if your wife lets you sleep in the shed. lol
Good find...
Good Luck with the wife.

BillsCamino 04-11-2015 08:27 PM

Awesome find Ray!!! Love that year and color combo...my '69 SS396 Chevelle was that combo including the stripe.

Great score Ray! I say you deserve it with all you've had to put up with at home lately.

shadowgray396 04-11-2015 09:48 PM

The swap meet won't let the truck leave until tomorrow once it closes because it is inside a building full of vendors.

Still have not decided on a truck yet. Thinking on waiting to see what happens this next model year on them.

BillsCamino 04-12-2015 07:55 AM

Anytime you need a pickup truck Ray...you're welcome to borrow mine. ;)

I loan it out all the time...

FlintTony 04-12-2015 08:08 AM

Nice Ray, nice. Will you be painting it back to orange?
