I hate buying new vehicles .. I hate it, I hate it!

My work truck just died. I have know for the past couple of months that the trannie on my work truck was going south . It just rolled over to 200,000 miles and considering the litany of things that do not work on it or are in need of replacement and the numerous dents on the body from 16 years of hauling building materials, sometimes on four-wheel drive roads, its a "dying horse" , or sould I say dead!. I dont feel good about dropping more money into it. I have known all along that, although this has been a really good truck (1994 z-71, 4WD, 350/Auto) it has outlived its usefullness and the time toreplace it is NOW.

I cannot think of anything attractive about going through this new car shopping process. Its a mind game between me and "them" .... and my mind isnt really conditioned to operate in that mode.

I dont want to be a Guinea pig to some untested and new device (4-6-8 Cadillac motors, Edsels, opti-spark ignition, chevy 350 diesels are some of the products of the past). I expect a company to stand behind its products and lets face it that is not always the case.

I also want honesty. Dont promise me "0% financing" and sit me down, do all the paperwork and drop on me, "Sorry you dont dont qualify, it takes a credit score of 785 and yours is 784" and then proceed to write up, and expect me to commit to a 8% car loan. Knowing all along that probably only five percent of his customers can qualify for his "0%" standards.

And pricing ... dont waste my time, what is the rock bottom price you will sell me your vehicle for? You need to make a fair profit and I need/want a fair price. I liken this aspect of "negotiating" to crossing the border from TiaJuana, back into the U.S. and dickering with that vendor following your car on foot as it creeps in line to the inspection station. The whole time trying to get the price down on that black-velvet picture of Elvis down .

As you can tell I am not looking forward to my future car-shopping activity !!!!

We have Gary; he should able to help. Just make sure you don't give them your keys at any time or they have you; you can always walk away if the deal is going badly. Also keep any open mind and don't get locked on any one truck even if it's the perfect one.

LOL. As most of you probably know,I run a dealership. My wife wanted a new car this year and without a doubt it was the worst ever trying to choose what to get. As for pricing I always get "the insider deal":p just like when Seinfeld bought a Saab from Putty. She decided on a Jeep last week and I am glad it's over. Would have been simple if they still made Pacificas.

I don't like buying new cars either. The last 3 vehicles it wasn't so bad. Found a dealership with good sales people, no pressure, no bull s***.

I would like to get my wife into a newer car (08 Mustang vert would do) and get rid of our 96 Explorer but she wont let me as long as the Explorer still gets her there . So I guess it will go til its dead cause she dont want to start over. When I bought my Explorer I called a dealership 50 miles from home and told him what I wanted and how much I was willing to pay and he called me back with a lower price than I quoted him. This was a small dealer who wanted my business and he earned it.

Some times we hate to buy new vehicles but i think for our loved one's getting a new vehicle is nothing in front of the joy while receiving the new car.

Welp Darrell let me down ... "Oh you mean you wanted a price out the door?" ... found it somewhere else, they did a dealer trade and the truck came from 325 miles away. Picked it up yesterday (Sunday) ... glad that is over!

Just a heads up .... did yawl know that "dealer incentives" are included in the sales tax? .... ie, the $5,250 is figured into the sales tax figure then $5,250 is subtracted from the sum to give the actual cost.... damn greedy government!!!

I am done with big dealers, my buddy owns a Ford dealership and he gives me no BS, he even helped find my Excursion and did all of the leg work, I will gladly pay for good service.

So what did you end up getting? I'm assuming it was new with everything you were looking for, right?

Rank 05-04-2010 10:27 PM

No I didnt get what I wanted but I got function. This is a work truck so it will fit the bill to a tee .... I guess the big diesel with all the bells and whistles is going to have to wait a year or two.

... gulp, white!

grandsport 05-06-2010 02:42 PM

You guys may hate buying 'em but I love selling 'em. Thanks for stopping in,happy motoring. Waving

rak1 05-06-2010 03:06 PM

I love buying them but I hate the payments you have to make afterwards. I always feel like an Arabic trader trying to outsmart the seller. I did well on the Dodge Ram last year; I bought it three weeks before they declared bankruptcy so I got it out the door for 34k; retail was 49k I also got 0% for four years which I was happy with through Dodge. It's fully loaded with the Laramie package with all the options.

White is nice for a work truck; it doesn't show marks as bad and graphic logo's stand out better.

grandsport 05-06-2010 04:24 PM

White is cool. All my wife will drive.
