Bang in rear left

Ms Grumpy 06-02-2010 10:28 AM

It would make it a whole lot easier to find if you linked it. Or copy and paste it here. Then we can help too.

Hank70SS 06-02-2010 10:36 AM

Could it be metal flexing and popping? Do you have the frame braces on the rear control arms?

Trophyman 06-04-2010 12:52 AM

Yessir evrything is tight looks good-bushing wise
Thanks
Randy

Trophyman 06-06-2010 11:25 PM

OK. Here goes.
On jack stands all day. Looked and tugged and hit everything. Everything is perfect. All bolts, nuts are tight with no sign of wobbling, etc.
It only does it under acceleration from a stop and if you're on it when it shifts.
So........ Put my wife in back seat and drove it. 50-75% gone!!!
No noise when shifting-only a little bit left when I hit it off the line. Wife stuffed towels between seat edge and panel and sat on driver side in rear.
Noise is gone !!!!!
Put her in front and left towels. Only a fraction of noise left.
Almost sounds like (now) a big socket or steel ball is banging between the well and the 1/4. Took off the vent screen in the door jamb. Everything is tight and nothing lying at the bottom like it sounds like.

Will start again tomorrow.
Any ideas?
Randy

Trophyman 06-06-2010 11:33 PM

I copied the 2 posts backwards
dumb, huh?
But what does anybody think?
Thanks
Randy
Took back seats out. Double checked every bushing, bolt, mount, weld there is and everything looks good. No cracking in bushings, rubbers, etc. Body mounts all tight. U Joints are tight and greased.
It sounds like the sound is coming from inside the quarter on driver side. With seat out and sitting back there, sounds like it's just below the line where the vinyl top trim runs parallel with the body. About in that area. We reached from front to back and back to front. Nothing in there except my wife's fingers. (scared the hell out of her too)
Ran the car on the stands, but no noise. It doesn't get the same "rise" out of the car. No torque twist or lift ya' know?
So now it comes and goes. ARRRGGGHHH!
Had the wife walk along side the car and I punched it and braked, punched it and braked. Can't hear it from the outside.
Okay-- bear with me here... It sounds like a chunk or a ball of steel hanging on a string inside the quarter-- "Banging" against the wall. But not a sound under panic stop braking.

Now what?
Any ideas?

Thanks,
Randy

Wow! Look at me.....
Got 'em backwards but they're here.
I hope Gary doesn't banish me!!!!

Hi Gary!!

Randy

Hank70SS 06-07-2010 06:33 AM

Still sounds like something related to rear axle and frame twist, that's why I was thinking frame braces. You can get MOOG bushings at AutoValue and NAPA I think.

I think you said all body mounts are good and tight, correct?

Trophyman 06-07-2010 05:42 PM

Yessir all tight and the body bushings are mushroomed out like they're supposed to be. I need to get it on a rack and double check all the bushings and bolts with no load and use a jack to pre load it I guess. What a pain, huh? But I'll find it!!!
Thanks Hank.
Randy

Good luck Randy. Those type of problems are really hard to help with over the internet. I'm sure you'll nail it.

Trophyman 06-07-2010 07:15 PM

Hank,
Then you have to come over and visit. BBQ, beer and lying.
What time can I expect you?

I'll PM you my address so you can send the plane ticket.

I'd love to stop by next time I'm out there. Remind me, where's Bakersfield? My daughter is living in LA area right now.

Hank hit the nail on the head.I worked for GM as a tec for several years and will give you this advise. You said the u joints are tight and greased. That doesant mean they are good. You said its under torque when it happens so the first thing Id do is remove the drive shaft and remove the joint caps.Ive been bitten in the rear a few times being lazy.Remove the rear wheels and drums.Check the stud hols in wheels for damage or a cracked wheel. Also Ive seen this before.A crack in the flex plate if you have a auto. This most likly will not resonate to the rear but its good to check everything. You may hear the noise comming from where you think it is and its resonating through from where you would never think of looking.I had one before that made a banging noise under power and turned out to be loose/worn carrier bearings. This is something you wont find just by looking under the car or spinning the wheels on the lift.Another thing to check before tearing into it is the exaust. If its comming in contact anyplace you should see something.A broken dr side motor mount will cause exaust noise also.Bottom line is get a 12 pack and a good light to inspect everything.Good luck and keep us posted on what you find.

Trophyman 06-13-2010 12:27 PM

I bought all 8 Moog bushings and installing them tomorrow.
Hopefully that will solve this.
While on the rack, we will remove the drive shaft and check the u joints and motor mounts.
Thank you for your time and expertise. I appreciate it.

80 miles n/o LA, over the grapevine. Big mountain range between here and LA.
Welcome any time !!

Randy

Trophyman 06-15-2010 09:20 PM

Ok. Replaced all the bushings in the rear. Bang is still there.
Found the spot welds on the drivers side of the metal divider from trunk to cab, broken. Put 6 vise grips along that top edge. Bang still there. No reduction at all. Next is removing LR panel to see what's under there.
Aaaaarrrrrrgghhhh. I'll keep you posted.
Thanks
Randy.

Hank70SS 06-16-2010 06:31 AM

Six welds broken and that wasn't it, wow. This is getting pretty interesting, I'm sure it's just getting aggravating for you. Good luck.

Trophyman 06-16-2010 08:18 PM

Found it.
S***
no laughing!!!!!

The bracket thingie that guides the parking brake cable inside the frame was upside down. It had been stuck for who knows how long. Then it came loose and flopped back under power. Under braking it would right itself but couldn't hit the frame because it was sliding over the cable. Took it off, righted it, and voilą ---- no more bang.
That only took three days on the rack and $400

So check your thingie if you have a bang

Thanks
Randy

Hank70SS 06-17-2010 06:11 AM

Sorry Randy but I had to laugh a little. Glad you found it and it wasn't a major problem.

zombie1969 06-17-2010 01:58 PM

Did you need the 12 pack and flashlight to find it or just the 12 pack.Funny how in the end it always seems to be the simplest things you overlook.:)

I laughed too. About an hour after it was fixed. What was it Buford T. Justice said?
Sumbitch......

God it feels good to drive my car again without the anticipation of the bang.

Thanks guys for all the suggestions. I hope somebody gets some good out of my experience. (everybody but Hank-- he laughed) LOL

Thanks,
Randy:)

I thought his rear quarter was going to fall off or he would see the the rear end in the rear view mirror. Now he tells us it's a bracket thingie for a cable. :D

Trophyman 06-23-2010 04:58 PM

Okay, Hank. Now you're down to a hamburger and a warm glass of water.
Keep it up and you will owe me dinner!!!:p

Hank70SS 06-23-2010 05:54 PM

Okay, we'll just call it even. Actually not sure why you would owe me anything in the first place. You have to admit, after all you went through then find out it's cable bracket, hook, whatever, is kind of funny. Well at least it is to me. :D

Derek69SS 06-24-2010 11:35 AM

Glad to hear it was something simple... reminds me of last night trying for hours to diagnose trailer light problems on my truck. Next time I'll check the fuses FIRST :o

Hank70SS 06-24-2010 01:46 PM

Sounds like how I would do it. Start at the trailer and make sure all the wiring is perfect. Slowly work my way back until I get to the fuse box. At least when you get done you know all the wiring is good.
